An interdisciplinary forensic approach in a mummified child with evidence of abuse and neglect
If mummified remains with partial skeletonization of a subadult are found, collaboration among forensic experts is requiredIn this case, dried subdural blood coagulum indicated post-traumatic, non-spontaneous subdural haemorrhagePeriosteal reaction present on the facial bones and distal portion of the humerus was a suspicious findingAnalyses of female subadult remains based on an interdisciplinary approach revealed a syndrome of child abuse and n…
Population genetic analysis of 12 X-STR markers in Slovakia
Background: During the last 20 years, X-chromosomal STR markers have become widely used in forensic genetics and paternity testing. Nevertheless, to exploit their full potential in any given population, a reliable reference dataset needs to be established. Since no relevant studies concerning these markers have been performed on the Slovak population so far, we decided to analyse several commonly used markers in this population. Aim: To create an…
Mutational analysis of 16 STR markers in the Slovak population
This study provides data which can be used to further strengthen the correct paternity index calculations and reliability of paternity testing in Slovakia
Demographic, temporal and environmental effects on the frequency of cribra orbitalia in three Early Medieval populations from western Slovakia
Developmental anomalies in skeletal remains from the Great Moravia and Middle Ages cemeteries at Devín (Slovakia)
Developmental anomalies were scored and prevalences were computed for two skeletal collections from Devín (southwestern Slovakia). The first sample Devín-Hrad (DH) is dated to the Middle Ages (11th-12thcentury) and includes 217 skeletons. The second collection Devín-Za kostolom (FR) includes 112 burials and is dated to the Great Moravian period (9thcentury). In both samples, the evidence of spina bifida occulta occurred most frequently of all the…
Atresia of an External Acoustic Meatus in an Individual from Historical Bratislava(Slovakia)
A case of atresia of the external acoustic meatus is described here. The lesion occurs in a calvarium belonging to the large sample of skeletal remains excavated from the ossuary at St. Jacob's Chapel (Bratislava, Southwest Slovakia) dated to the 15th-18th centuries. The affected individual was probably a female aged 40-50 years at the time of death. Macroscopic and CT examinations were performed. Congenital atresia and/or infection of the extern…
Intentional cranial vault deformation in a Slavonic population from the medieval cemetery in Devín (Slovakia)
A case of skull deformation is presented in a young individual (probably a girl), from Devín Castle dated to the Early Medieval Period (10th–12th centuries ad). The cause of deformation could be the result of developmental disease—turricephaly, or as a result of trauma in early childhood. X-rays did not confirm the hypothesis of turricephaly. According to the classificatory system of artificial deformations our specimen belongs to the circumferen…
