  • Non-linear dynamics in mammalian voice production

    Open Access•Isao T Tokuda•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2018•References: 1

Animal vocalizations range from tonal sounds to irregular atonal sounds and are generated from non-linear oscillations of the vocal folds as well as from turbulent noise in the glottis. Comprehensive study on bioacoustic signals indicates the existence of a diversity of non-linear phenomena, such as limit cycles, subharmonics, biphonation, chaos, and bifurcations in animal vocalizations, which may provide keys to understanding animal communicatio…

  • Soprano singing in gibbons

Open Access•Hiroki Koda, Takeshi Nishimura et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 37

Diversifications in primate vocalization, including human speech, are believed to reflect evolutionary modifications in vocal anatomy and physiology. Gibbon song is acoustically unique, comprising loud, melodious, penetrating pure tone‐like calls. In a white‐handed gibbon, Hylobates lar , the fundamental frequency ( f 0 ) of song sounds is amplified distinctively from the higher harmonics in normal air. In a helium‐enriched atmosphere, f 0 does n…
