  • Corpse identification in mass disasters and other violence

Open Access•Vina Vaswani, Luciana Caenazzo et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2023•References: 1

In October 2022, the Centre for Ethics of Yenepoya University hosted a national workshop entitled: "Respect for human dignity of the unidentified dead from mass disasters and other violence: strategies for the ethical management of biological samples and personal data". The aim was to explore and share experience and ethical considerations regarding the management and identification of human remains in the event of disasters, with the purpose to …

  • The Usage of Mobile Apps to Fight Violence against Women

Open Access•Pamela Tozzo, Andrea Gabbin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The prevalence of violence against women continues to grow and this plague has had a huge impact from a clinical, social and judicial point of view. For this reason, alongside the efforts made at the legislative level to prevent the phenomenon and to improve assistance to victims in recent years, efforts to contain and better manage this phenomenon have also grown in the extra-legislative sphere: for example, through the application of new techno…

  • Gene editing and gender-specific medicine

    Open Access•Silvia Zullo, Luciana Caenazzo•ARTICLE•Palgrave Communications•2020

Gender-specific medicine is a clinical discipline that studies the impact of sex and gender on physiology, pathophysiology, and diseases. Human genome modification of somatic cells could be useful for treating or preventing a range of diseases and for improving the safety and efficiency of existing gene therapy techniques currently in use or under development for clinical application. Sex and gender differences have been analysed in the incidence…

  • Understanding social oocyte freezing in Italy

Open Access•Pamela Tozzo, Antonio Fassina et al.•ARTICLE•Life Sciences Society and Policy•2019•References: 28

In Western countries, a social trend toward delaying childbearing has been observed in women of reproductive age for the last two decades. This delay is due to different factors related to lifestyle, such as the development of a professional career or the absence of the right partner. As a consequence, women who defer childbearing may find themselves affected by age-related infertility when they decide to conceive. Fertility preservation techniqu…

  • Young people’s awareness on biobanking and DNA profiling

Open Access•Pamela Tozzo, Antonio Fassina et al.•ARTICLE•Life Sciences Society and Policy•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 29

Current policy approaches to social and ethical issues surrounding biobanks manifest lack of public information given by researchers and government, despite the evidence that Italian citizens are well informed about technical and other public perspectives of biotechnologies. For this reason, the focus of our survey was to interview our University's students on these aspects. The sample consisted of Padua University students (N = 959), who were ad…

  • Y-chromosome haplotypes and clan structure of the Sherpa of the Solukhumbu (Nepal)

    Open Access•Irene Amoruso, Luciana Caenazzo et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2013•References: 3

The present-day Sherpa are thought to descend from a small number of ancestors that settled in Nepal several centuries ago, coming from the Eastern Tibetan region of Kham. A generally accepted ethnographic theory involves the out-of-Kham migration of four proto-clans between the 15th and 16th centuries. Traditional Sherpa society is still divided into clans, called ru, which are patrilin-early transmitted. Ru therefore roughly correspond to the s…

  • Genetic polymorphism of C3 in the Veneto population, Italy

Chiara Crestani, Luciana Caenazzo et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1989

The distribution of C3 phenotypes in the population of Veneto was investigated by electrophoresis on agarose gel. In our sample (n = 810) the three common phenotypes C3 SS, C3 FF and C3 FS and a further phenotype, C3 S-VF, were observed. The following gene frequencies could be calculated: C3S = 0.8068, C3F = 0.1926 and C3V = 0.0006. These frequencies have been compared with those found in other populations. The analysis of 21 mother-child pairs w…

  • Genetic studies on the Asmat population (Irian-Jaya, Indonesia)

    P Cortivo, M Tommaseo et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1987•Cited by: 2

The Asmat are a population of about 35,000 people living on the South-West coast of Irian-Jaya (Indonesia; New Guinea). This paper presents the results of enzyme group and serum protein group typings in a sample of Asmats living in the coastal region around Agats. Red cell enzyme polymorphisms (EaP, PGM1, 6-PGD, EsD, ADA and AK) could be typed in 154 blood samples, serum protein polymorphisms (Ge, alpha 1-AT, PLG, Tf and Hp) in 160 blood samples.…
