Community resilience of women in rural areas of Lempira in the Republic of Honduras
Introduction: Building community resilience is an important part of disaster preparedness. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the status of community resilience and their relationship with social capital. Methods: Data were collected between August and November 2021 by surveying a group of over 18-year-old females in the Republic of Honduras where hit by two hurricanes and a pandemic in 2020. Cluster sampling was used in this…
Factors Associated with Smoking and Drinking among Early Adolescents in Vanuatu
This cross-sectional study determined whether various factors, such as parental behavior, attitude, and knowledge and sibling and peer behaviors, were associated with smoking and drinking among early adolescents in the Republic of Vanuatu. For this purpose, logistic regression analysis was used to determine the relative importance of the factors as well as the influences of the parents/guardians, siblings, and peers. The participants consisted of…
Health and Diet among People Living in an Isolated Area
Pingelap Island in Pohnpei state is geographically isolated as the nearest island is 70 km away, and such geographical isolation is a challenge for public health due to the limited access to health services. This study aims to reveal the health situation on the island and investigate the influence of geographical isolation on health and diet. For that purpose, the result was compared with those who are living in a community on the main island of …
Association study of CREBRF missense variant (rs373863828
The rs373863828-A allele may not directly affect the level of serum HDL-cholesterol independent of BMI. To confirm the present findings, association studies with large sample sizes and functional analyses are required
DRD4 VNTR polymorphism in Oceanic populations
To study the origin of Polynesians and the gene flow from Polynesian ancestors to indigenous Melanesians, a 48-bp variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) in exon 3 of the dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) gene was investigated for six Austronesian (AN)-speaking populations—two in Tonga (Nuku’alofa and Ha’apai), three in Solomon Islands (Munda, Paradise, and Rawaki, of whom Rawaki was a Micronesian migrant group), and one in Papua New Guinea (Balopa), …
The serum leptin level and body mass index in Melanesian and Micronesian Solomon Islanders
Objectives: This study examined the association between the serum leptin level and body mass index (BMI) and the effects of urbanization and polymorphisms of leptin ( LEP ) or leptin receptor ( LEPR ) genes on the leptin level in three Solomon Islands populations. Methods: A Melanesian population living in a remote area (participants: 106 males and 106 females, ages: 18–74 years), a Melanesian population in an urban area (89 and 94, 18–79 years),…
The Pacific lineage (2E) of JC polyomavirus is prevalent in Sumba Island, Eastern Indonesia
Recent studies have identified a Pacific lineage (2E) of JC polyomavirus (also designated as JC virus or JCV) that occurs in both Island Southeast Asia and Oceania, but not in mainland Asia. It has been postulated that this lineage traveled with Austronesian-speaking people who are now spread throughout Island Southeast Asia and Oceania (excluding Australia and inland and southern New Guinea). However, to date, the 2E lineage has been identified …
HLA-DRB1 polymorphism on Ha'ano island of the Kingdom of Tonga
HLA-DRB1 polymorphism was investigated by molecular DNA-based typing in 37 Tongans living on Ha’ano island of the Ha’apai group. The predominant HLA-DRB1 alleles were DRB1*0901 (20.3%) and DRB1*0403 (18.9%). A principal component analysis of the DRB1 allele frequencies discriminated between the Polynesians and other Oceanian populations, including Melanesians, Micronesians, and Australian Aborigines. Both present and previous studies have shown t…
Brief communication
Archaeological, linguistic, and genetic studies show that Austronesian (AN)-speaking Polynesian ancestors came from Asia/Taiwan to the Bismarck Archipelago in Near Oceania more than 3,600 years ago, and then expanded into Remote Oceania. However, it remains unclear whether they extensively mixed with indigenous Melanesians who had populated the Bismarck Archipelago before their arrival. To examine the extent of admixture between Polynesian ancest…
Malaria infection and human behavioral factors
The effect of human behavior on malaria infection was investigated in a holoendemic area in the Solomon Islands, using a newly developed mathematical model based on the results of blood examinations and 2 weeks of direct observations. The present study indicated that the place where individuals spent the evening had no significant relation to malaria infection, but that some kinds of clothes significantly reduced malaria infection. However, as th…
HLA‐DRB1 frequencies of non‐Austronesian‐speaking Gidra in south New Guinea and their genetic affinities with Oceanian populations
DNA typing of HLA‐DRB1 genes was conducted for 192 samples from the Gidra who speak one of the non‐Austronesian languages and inhabit the southern lowlands of New Guinea. Comparison of the allele frequencies with those of eight other Oceanian populations reveals that the Gidra are genetically closest to the non‐Austronesian‐speaking Goroka and, next, to the Aboriginal Australian groups, but are remote from the Austronesian‐speaking groups in main…
Serum mineral and trace element concentrations in the Gidra of lowland Papua new Guinea
Serum concentrations of 11 elements (Na, Mg, P, S, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Sr and Se) in the adult populations of the Gidra in lowland Papua New Guinea were measured. The marked characteristic of the element profile in the Gidra was higher Cu and slightly lower Zn concentrations than those in developed countries. Zinc nutriture of the Gidra was judged to be marginally deficient, presumably because of their high intake of crude fiber and Fe, which are …
