  • A comparative study on testicular microstructure and relative sperm production in gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans

    Open Access•Hideko Fujii‐Hanamoto, H Fujii-Hanamoto et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2011

We performed histological analyses for comparing testicular microstructure between the gorilla, chimpanzee, and orangutan. Testicular samples were obtained by autopsy or biopsy from 10 gorillas, 11 chimpanzees, and 7 orangutans from several zoos and institutes. The seminiferous epithelia were thick in the chimpanzee and orangutan but thin in the gorilla. Leydig cells in the interstitial tissue were abundant in the gorilla. The acrosomic system wa…

  • Testicular histological examination of spermatogenetic activity in captive gorillas ( Gorilla gorilla )

Open Access•Tomoo Enomoto, Kiyoaki Matsubayashi et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2004

To clarify the reproductive state of male gorillas, we performed histological examinations on the testicles of 10 male gorillas ( Gorilla gorilla ). The testicular samples were obtained by autopsy, and ordinal histological preparations were made for light microscopy. The poor spermatogenesis of this species was characterized by the following findings: First, spermatogenesis was evident in only four samples. Meiosis progressed in two samples, but …

  • A Comparative Study on Histology of Testes in Macaca nemestrina, M. fascicularis and M. fuscata

Open Access•Tomoo Enomoto, Kiyoaki Matsubayashi et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•1997

  • Seasonal changes in spermatogenic cell degeneration in the seminiferous epithelium of adult Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata fuscata)

Open Access•Tomoo Enomoto, Kiyoaki Matsubayashi et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•1995

  • Preliminary Report on Histological Characteristics of Male Reproductive Organs in Senile Japanese Macaques

Open Access•Kiyoaki Matsubayashi, Tomoo Enomoto et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•1994•Cited by: 1

Histological characteristics of male reproductive organs were observed macrographically and microscopically in Japanese macaques aged 20 years old or more. As the senility proceeded, testicular weight and the diameter of the seminiferous tubules decreased. Likewise, the weights and epithelial heights of the seminal vesicle and prostate gland decreased in old males. Histologically, a proliferation of interstitial tissue was notable in every organ …
