  • Gendered perceptions and socio-economic and spatial determinants of fear of crime

    Open Access•Natalia Sypion-Dutkowska, Arkadiusz Kołodziej et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Geography.…•2024

The study of the fear of crime phenomenon provides a socially and politically important research question. Many studies show that gender differentiates the fear of crime, which is why we examine this phenomenon in a spatial perspective. The female versus male perspective of feelings of safety in residential areas were significantly different. The research was carried out using the CAWI technique in the city of Szczecin, in Poland (n=346). The res…

  • Effectiveness of CCTV systems as a crime preventive tool

Piotr Matczak, Andrzej Wójtowicz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 34

Based on data from eight Polish cities, we tested if closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring systems are effective in crime reduction and if the CCTV monitoring effects are durable. In a quasi-experimental method, we applied police data about four types of crime incidents in 2005–2014 as well as camera location. A preventive effect appeared in 10 of 17 of analysed paired treatment/comparison areas. The overall mean effect appears modest. In t…

Open Access•Natalia Sypion-Dutkowska, Minxuan Lan et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2022

The article aims to propose a new way of estimating the ambient and immobile urban population using geotagged tweets and age structure, and to test how they are related to urban crime patterns. Using geotagged tweets and age structure data in 37 neighborhoods of Szczecin, Poland, we analyzed the following crime types that occurred during 2015–2017: burglary in commercial buildings, drug crime, fight and battery, property damage, and theft. Using …

  • Impact of metropolization on the crime structure (case study of provincial capitals in Poland)

    Open Access•Natalia Sypion-Dutkowska, Michael Leitner et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 37

The aim of this study is to verify the hypothesis that the rapid metropolization process that has been taking place in large Polish cities since the beginning of the second phase of post-communist transition in 2000 leads to their socio-economic diversity, which is manifested, among others, in the differentiation of the level and structure of crime. Introduced into the discourse of this paper are subsequent stages of metropolization, which are ca…

    Open Access•Natalia Sypion-Dutkowska•ARTICLE•Archiwum Kryminologii•2015•References: 3

The aim of the article is to analyse the state and change in distribution of three types ofcrime (fights and beatings, domestic crimes, and automobile crime) in Szczecin duringthe years 2006-2010. It posits the following research questions: 1. Which type of crimes displayed a greater susceptibility to a spatial concentration? 2. Are there spaces with a higher intensity (density) of crimes and others free ofcrimes, and where are they? 3. Do spaces…
