  • Reassessing Hillforts in Central-Western Iberia

    Fernando Menéndez-Marsh, Fernando id_orcid Menéndez-Marsh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2026

This study proposes a formal geospatial approach to the contexts of fortified hilltop settlements that characterised the Iberian Peninsula during Iron Age (IA) II (fourth to first centuries BC), focusing on an area that encompasses Alto Alentejo in what is today Portugal and western Extremadura in Spain. Although the settlements here represent the most distinctive archaeological sites of this period, they remain poorly understood. The physical in…

The increasing agricultural intensification in the Alto Alentejo region (Portugal) poses a significant threat to archaeological sites. Conducting intensive surface surveys to identify and document Roman settlements prior to their degradation or potential destruction represents a valuable strategy to mitigate the impact of agricultural activities, allowing for the efficient and rapid collection of archaeological data. In this context, an intensive…

  • Introduction

    André Carneiro•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2025

From the perspective of the ruling powers in the Ancient world, the strategic vision involved connecting collective communities, not merely linking different locations. Numerous examples show that the perception of “people” took precedence over places of belonging, to the extent that entire communities were often relocated to areas far from their original territory. This vision also prevailed in road construction. All great empires built robust r…

The archaeological site of villa Horta da Torre in Portugal reveals distinctive architectural features within the context of Roman villae in Hispania. Notably, the triclinium was designed with an artificial cascade originating from a double apse wall, and the walls were adorned with mosaic tessellae panels and marble skirting. During the Roman era, the surrounding area belonged to the former province of Lusitania, with Augusta Emerita serving as …

  • Transport and distribution of heavy loads in ancient times

    Open Access•Pedro Trapero-Fernández, André Carneiro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This article analyses the distribution of Estremoz marble from the production centers to the redistribution ports and consumption areas. The marble of the Estremoz Anticline is the most important of the Roman province of Lusitania, and one most of the Hispania, located over150 km from the coast. This product was exploited and distributed to several cities in Roman Hispania and North Africa. This article examines how this transport was carried out…

  • El Castelo do Mau Vizinho, Arraiolos.

Open Access•Jesús García Sánchez, André Carneiro•ARTICLE•SPAL Revista de Prehistoria y…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Urbs in Rure

    Open Access•André Carneiro•ARTICLE•Journal of Mosaic Research•2017

One of the most remarkable characteristics in Lusitania’s villae is their diversity: Each place embodies a set of contents and symbols, which were carefully defined by their owners. By analysing all the different architectural and iconographic variants, we are trying to understand who these domini were and how the elites conveyed all contents belonging to the bigger picture of the Mediterranean Oikoumene. Landscape, building spaces and plants, th…

  • A Combined Multi‐analytical Approach for the Study of Roman Glass From South‐west Iberia

Open Access•Nick Schiavon, Adelinda Candeias et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 55

An integrated, multi‐analytical approach combining the high sensitivity of SR‐μXRF, the light element capability of PIXE/PIGE under a helium flux and the spatial resolution of BSEM + EDS was used to characterize chemical composition and corrosion of glass samples (first to fourth centuries ad ) from an important, but scarcely investigated, Roman region of south‐west Iberia (southern Portugal). The geochemical trends and associations of major, min…
