  • Enhancing biodiversity monitoring in impact assessment follow-up through landscape metrics

Larissa Ribeiro Souza, Carla Grigoletto Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2026

Field-based monitoring may be insufficient to detect biodiversity trends across scales, especially in projects that have the potential to impact extensive areas. Despite its importance, landscape-scale data collection is rare in impact monitoring practice. In this research, we tested landscape metrics to evaluate their contribution to enhancing forest biodiversity monitoring in the EIA follow-up process, using a case study of a bauxite mine in th…

  • Environmental impact assessment follow-up in offshore wind energy development: Strengths and gaps from regulatory frameworks in the international context

Anne Caroline Malvestio, Ana Paula Alves Dibo et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2026

Offshore wind energy (OWE) has gained international prominence as an alternative for the energy transition. Due to their potentially significant impacts, OWE projects are often subject to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Within the EIA process, follow-up is a crucial step in informing project’s management and enabling learning for future EIAs. Given that the regulatory framework is a core dimension of governance and foundational to effectiv…

  • Impacts of offshore wind farms: Significant for whom

Fernanda Aparecida Veronez, Ana Paula Alves Dibo et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2026

Significance determination is one of the most complex and least understood elements of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). In offshore projects, especially in sensitive coastal zones, this task becomes even more critical. This study evaluates the quality of significance determinations in Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) for offshore wind projects. A purposive sample of 11 EISs from England, Scotland, the United States, and Brazil was ana…

  • Availability and accessibility of Environmental Impact Assessment documents of the offshore wind sector in public repositories

Ana Paula Alves Dibo, Carla Grigoletto Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2026

The offshore wind energy sector is rapidly expanding globally, with dozens of new projects being proposed. As a consequence, the volume of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) documents prepared and stored in public repositories is increasing. To ensure transparency and support meaningful stakeholder participation, these documents must be available and accessible. This paper analyzes the current state of the availability and accessibility of EIA…

  • A systematic literature review on transparency in the mining industry reveals many under-researched topics

    Open Access•Rafaela Shinobe Massignan, Luis E Sanchez•ARTICLE•The Extractive Industries and…•2026•References: 11

We considered ‘transparency’ as access to information and public participation. • Literature about transparency in the mining sector was grouped into 6 clusters. • 8 under-studied topics where identified. • Disclosure and participation on tailings management is an understudied topic. • Under the lights of the findings, recommendations for future research are presented. Local communities, civil society organizations, and investors have been callin…

  • Energia “Limpa” sob Tensão: Eólica Offshore, Justiça Energética e Disputa de Poderes

Open Access•Thomaz Xavier, Alexander Turra et al.•ARTICLE•Diálogos Socioambientais•2025

  • Developing strategic environmental assessment in contexts of non-systematic practice: Contributions for offshore energy transition

Open Access•Juliana Siqueira-Gay, Ana Paula Alves Dibo et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2025

Energy transition initiatives are expanding the frontiers of offshore wind generation. Impact assessment instruments, such as strategic environmental assessment (SEA), should consider the consequences of these developments. By reviewing the literature on SEA and a case in Brazil, we draw lessons for harnessing potential SEA contributions to support offshore wind development in jurisdictions where its practice is non-systematic, i.e. conducted in …

  • Developing international guidance to make impact assessment follow-up happen – reflections on an interactive design process

Open Access•Angus Morrison-Saunders, Josien Arts et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2024

To advance impact assessment (IA) practice worldwide the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) has long promoted and published a series of international best practice principles, including the recently revised best practice principles for IA follow-up. IA follow-up refers to any kind of undertaking that seeks to ‘understand the outcomes of projects or plans’ that have been subject to IA. To support the implementation of these pri…

  • Enhancing ecological connectivity through biodiversity offsets to mitigate impacts on habitats of large mammals in tropical forest environments

Josianne Claudia Sales Rosa, Pedro Bueno Rocha Campos et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2023

Habitat loss and fragmentation are ecological impacts of development projects known to have severe effects on mammals' populations. Here, we study the role of connectivity assessment in Environmental Impact Assessment, focusing on its contribution to determining appropriate mitigation, in particular, biodiversity offsetting. For that purpose, we analysed the dispersal of large mammals in a region potentially influenced by a mine located in the At…

  • Gearing up impact assessment as a vehicle for achieving the UN sustainable development goals

Angus Morrison-Saunders, Luis E Sanchez et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2020

This article reflects on the potential for impact assessment (IA) to be a major vehicle for implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While it is acknowledged that the SDGs are intended to deliver broader outcomes than IA currently does, we nevertheless argue there is significant convergence between IA and the SDGs, which we explore utilising the key dimensions of sustainability assessment: comprehensiveness, strategicness and int…

This paper examined how an ecosystem service approach might be utilised to arrive at agreed post-mining land uses acceptable to communities and the mining company during mine closure planning. This was investigated in the context of a major bauxite mine in the Amazon region of Brazil. Data were gathered through document …

  • Improving quality

William A Ross, Angus Morrison-Saunders et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2006

Reviews of environmental impact assessment (EIA) practice, particularly by industrial proponents, have highlighted common shortfalls. EIA would benefit from more ‘common sense’, which is not very common. For example, issue scoping usually includes too many inconsequential factors, and issues not directly affecting project decisions. Consideration of significance is often vague, misleading or inconsistent. Quality of environmental impact statement…
