Unfamiliarity and Familiarity in the Bauman Archive
Reflecting on the author's role in establishing, cataloging, and interpreting the personal papers of Zygmunt Bauman, this article ponders central questions related to working on and with the archives of public intellectuals. It addresses the role that intellectuals, and Bauman in particular, hold in contemporary “memory wars” and the role that diverse forms and practices of archives play therein. It considers the difficulties posed by and possibi…
Unfamiliar Archives
This article documents the roundtable “Unfamiliar Archives,” which took place as part of a two-day event to mark twenty years of Cultural Politics. Drawing from a range of “archives in the making” related to activists, artists, social theorists, and digital media practices, the participants reflect on the political, ethical, and epistemological provocations offered by their specific archival encounters. In particular, the participants reflect on …
Authenticity and Gender: Public Responses to Great War Memoirs by Nurses and Frontline Soldiers in Britain, France and Germany
Great War memoirs by both soldiers and nurses emphasise the role of eye-witness in establishing the authority of the account. This authority is acknowledged in the public response to these texts, which crosses both national and gender boundaries. However, the response is asymmetric between genders: soldiers were often blamed for insisting on the primacy of personal experience in their accounts, on the grounds that this made the war seem senseless…
Our ears and our eyes: Journalists and fixers in Iraq
News from Iraq in the Western media is highly dependent upon Iraqi journalists and coworkers, especially fixers. This is partly due to the degradation of the security situation since the 2003 invasion, and partly due to language: few Western journalists speak Arabic at a professional level of competence. Interviews with Western journalists and fixers in Iraq reveal the high level of dependence involved. They also reveal some commonalities of unde…

Permission to joke: Some implications of a well-known principle

Development of the Fine Arts Under the Puritans
In all nations of the world the development of art in its earlier stages has had an undefined but intimate connection with some form of religion, hero-worship, or superstition. In Greek mythology, for instance, we find that Boreas, the North Wind, aided the Athenians against the Persian fleet. By continual repetition Boreas gradually assumed to those who spoke of this event a personal form and character, and at last developed into a divine or sem…
The Celt in Power: Tudor and Cromwell
In a former paper I pointed out some of the distinctive marks which appear to belong especially to the early British character. The importance of this is obvious both from a historical and from a political point of view when we consider the mixed and various types which in the present day inhabit our country
The Saxon Invasion and its Influence on our Character as a Race
In the following paper the term ‘Ancient Briton’ is applied to the whole of the mixed races which inhabited this island prior to the Teutonic irruption. They consisted of the two Celtic families (the Gaels and the Brythons, or Cymri), and the pre-Celtic races. On the divisions of the latter anthropology has not yet decidedly pronounced, though it seems probable that they were not homogeneous. In any case the principal pre-Celtic type at present d…
Pestilences: Their Influence on the Destiny of Nations, as Shown in the History of the Plague
In that region of the world where the three continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa meet, there are constantly latent the germs of that typical form of pestilence known as the Egyptian or Levantine Plague. This frightful disease has, on account of its enormous and rapid mortality, struck terror into all minds, and has consequently been recorded by the historians of every nation that has been visited by it. From the records that have been handed do…
