  • Causes and effects of misreported syllable structures

    Laurence Labrune•ARTICLE•Theoretical Linguistics•2024

This commentary paper offers a discussion on the methodological, epistemological, and theoretical issues concerning the status of the syllable and mora, as well as the problems raised by their (mis)characterization. It first addresses some methodological biases that occur in the description and analysis of the phonological units of languages, the problem of the reliability of speaker intuitions, with an example taken from French verlan, as well a…

  • Les consonnes rhotiques du gascon revisitées

    Laurence Labrune, Joël Miró-Lozano•ARTICLE•Linx•2022•References: 12

Cet article porte sur la question des consonnes rhotiques [ɾ] and [r] en gascon. Il développe l'hypothèse que le gascon a non pas deux consonnes rhotiques distinctes sur le plan phonémique (/ɾ/ et /r/), comme le supposent les approches traditionnelles, mais seulement une (/r/). La différence phonétique en surface entre les deux segments est analysée comme relevant d'une différence phonologique entre une rhotique simple et une rhotique géminée (/r…

  • Word-initial rhotic avoidance: A typological survey

    Open Access•Laurence Labrune•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2021

This paper addresses the issue of word-initial rhotic avoidance (WIRA) from a typological point of view. Its first aim is to document WIRA cross-linguistically, based on the examination of a sample of 200 languages designed by the WALS (Dryer and Haspelmath 2013). This set of 200 languages has been surveyed in order to reveal rhotic (and more generally liquid) phonotactic patterns in relation to word-initial avoidance. On the basis of this survey…

  • Japanese apophonic compounds

Laurence Labrune, Mark Irwin•ARTICLE•Journal of Japanese Linguistics•2021

This paper provides a comprehensive description and analysis of Japanese apophonic compounds, such as ama-gasa ( ame + kasa ), ko-kage ( ki + kage ) or kamu - tikara ( kami + tikara ), in which the initial element exhibits one of three different pairs of final vowel alternations. The three pairs involved are e ∼ a , i ∼ o , and i ∼ u . To determine the controlling factors for apophony, its morphological function, its overall characteristics and i…

  • Questioning the universality of the syllable: Evidence from Japanese

    Open Access•Laurence Labrune•ARTICLE•Phonology•2012

This paper reexamines the issue of the mora, the foot and the syllable in Tokyo Japanese, and shows that whereas the mora and the foot are indisputably present and active, the evidence for the syllable is inconspicuous and disputable. Building on this observation, I claim that Tokyo Japanese makes no use of the syllable. Instead, two types of mora are distinguished: regular CV moras and weak (deficient) moras. Weak moras include the moraic nasal,…

  • A propos d'un trait typologique du japonais: L'absence de r à l'initiale des mots indépendants de Yamato kotoba

    Open Access•Laurence Labrune•ARTICLE•Ebisu•1993

Aucun mot de Yamato kotoba ne commence par r. Ce son est pourtant parmi les plus fréquents en position non-initiale. Cet article montre qu'en proto-japonais, r et la consonne zéro notée ' ( consonne présente à l'initiale des syllabes dites vocaliques se trouvaient en distribution complémentaire et doivent être considérés comme deux réalisations différentes en fonction de l'environnement phonétique d'une même consonne sous-jacente. Celle-ci se réa…
