Heather Brookes, Frenette Southwood et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2026

This article describes the adaptation of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) for South Africa's 11 official spoken languages. The CDI is a parent-report tool that measures early language development from 8 to 30 months. We developed cross-linguistically comparable CDIs, representing two distinct language families, West Germanic and southern Bantu, using a common protocol. We describe our approach to item construction and…

Open Access•Heather Brookes, Frenette Southwood et al.•ARTICLE•First Language•2025

This study compares early gesture and lexical development in 1,199 infants (0;8–1;6) across South Africa’s 11 official spoken languages using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Gestures. There are mismatches between ontologies of language and languaging, on the one hand, and language policy or language teaching, on the other. South Africa has a proliferation of policies in both the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training, with limited implementation and desired outcome, in other words, a misalignment of policies with curriculum. In addition, institutions tend to follow a populist and simp…

  • Situating Some Aspects of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in South African Higher Education Within Southern Theories

Open Access•Chaka, Chaka Chaka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Issues in…•2022

This paper discusses aspects of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in South African higher education (HE) and locates it within what it calls Southern theories. Three examples of such theories that the paper advances are Southern decolonial theory, decoloniality, and transversality, which it frames from the Global South standpoint. Concerning the first theory, the paper argues that SoTL, both as a notion and as a practice, needs to b…

  • Relocating English Studies and SoTL in the Global South

Open Access•Chaka, Chaka Chaka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Issues in…•2022

South Africa has policies and frameworks for curriculum design, transformation, and quality assurance in each public institution of higher education (HE). These policies influence the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), particularly at the departmental and disciplinary levels of English Studies. Despite the policy narratives and rhetoric, English Studies still carries vestiges of colonialism and apartheid in South Africa. Similarly, in o…

Drawing on discourse-centred online ethnography (DCOE) and discourse analysis, this article explores language alternation in one online…

  • Performing gendered identities

    Sibusiso Clifford Ndlangamandla•ARTICLE•Muziki•2010

This paper analyses the voices, and subjectivities that are constructed in songs about men and women within siSwati traditional popular music.
