Early career health shocks and long-run labour market outcomes
The economic literature on health shocks and labour market outcomes largely focuses on acute health shocks at older ages, leaving limited evidence on long-term labour-market consequences. By examining the consequences of incident hospital-diagnosed back disorders among early-career workers, this study addresses that gap in the literature. We link population-wide Danish administrative registers (1996-2017) to follow a cohort of 157,692 individuals…
PauseNørd Pilot Study
We pilot-tested movement breaks lasting PauseNørd . Our mixed-methods feasibility study explored the acceptability, practicality, expansion, and limited efficacy of the PauseNørd breaks (PN breaks) via observation, questionnaires, and short interviews. Three groups of students tested lectures with and without the PN breaks. The PN breaks were well accepted by students and lecturers, and they were practically easy to implement. Suggestions to impr…
Copenhagen consensus statements on workplace health enhancing physical activity programmes
Workplace health enhancing physical activity (HEPA) programmes are associated with physical activity promotion and reduction of sedentary time among employees. Whilst the workplace is often considered an appropriate setting for such programmes, however, ethical and implementation challenges remain. Furthermore, debate still exists concerning programme rationale, efficacy, effectiveness, and impact. In 2024, 24 researchers from twelve countries co…
Designing industrial work to be ‘just right’ to promote health - a study protocol for a goldilocks work intervention

Development and Implementation of ‘Just Right’ Physical Behavior in Industrial Work Based on the Goldilocks Work Principle—A Feasibility Study
The Goldilocks Work Principle expresses that productive work should be redesigned to comprise physical behaviors of different intensities in a composition promoting workers' health and fitness. This study is the first to assess the feasibility of redesigning work in an industrial setting according to the Goldilocks Work Principle. We recruited workers ( n = 20) from a brewery in Denmark, and we conducted a participatory 16-week intervention inclu…
The Influence of Nursing Home, Ward, and Eldercare Workers on the Number of Resident Handlings Performed per Shift in Eldercare
The purpose of our study was to investigate which organizational levels and factors determine the number of resident handlings in eldercare. We conducted a multi-level study, stratified on day and evening shifts, including information on four levels: nursing homes (n = 20), wards within nursing homes (day, n = 120; evening, n = 107), eldercare workers within wards (day, n = 619; evening, n = 382), and within eldercare workers (i.e., days within e…
The Effect of Physical Exercise Training on Neck and Shoulder Muscle Function Among Military Helicopter Pilots and Crew
Introduction: This study presents secondary outcome analyses, in terms of muscle function [i.e., maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and rate of torque development (RTD)] from a parallel group, single blinded, randomized controlled trial introducing a physical exercise training intervention aiming to reduce neck pain among military helicopter pilots and crew-members. Methods: Participants (50 pilots, 58 crew-members) were recruited from the Royal…
Patterns in the Occurrence and Duration of Musculoskeletal Pain and Interference with Work among Eldercare Workers—A One-Year Longitudinal Study with Measurements Every Four Weeks
The objective of this study was to examine patterns of musculoskeletal pain episodes over time. We conducted a one-year follow-up study among 275 eldercare workers with measurements of musculoskeletal pain (low back pain (LBP) and neck/shoulder pain (NSP)) and pain-related work interference (PWI) reported via text message every four weeks. We found a constant, high four-weekly prevalence of LBP and NSP (between 61% and 72%). The distributions of …
Why people engage in a weight loss intervention at their workplace - a stratified case study
ClinicalTrial.gov : NCT01015716 , registration data 14.12.2010 (Prospectively registered)
Using an intervention mapping approach to develop prevention and rehabilitation strategies for musculoskeletal pain among surgeons
The present Intervention Mapping study demonstrated that musculoskeletal pain among surgeons is a complex area that needs attention. Our findings highlight a need for individual behavioural changes as well as organisational, attitudinal, and management changes
Time spent cycling, walking, running, standing and sedentary
We found a long duration and high prevalence of cycling and walking, but also that many adult Copenhageners spent much time sedentary. Population groups with low participation in physical activities such as cycling and walking should be targeted in future initiatives towards an active, healthy society
Attendance barriers experienced by female health care workers voluntarily participating in a multi-component health promotion programme at the workplace
ClinicalTrials.gov. NCT02843269 - 06.27.2016 - retrospectively registered
Background, design and conceptual model of the cluster randomized multiple-component workplace study
NCT02843269 , 06.27.2016 - retrospectively registered
Face Validity of the Single Work Ability Item
The observed association between work ability and objectively measured %HRR over several days among male blue-collar workers supports the face validity of the single work ability item. It is a useful and valid measure of the relation between physical work demands and resources among male blue-collar workers. The contrasting association among females needs to be further investigated
A conceptual model for worksite intelligent physical exercise training - Ipet - intervention for decreasing life style health risk indicators among employees
ClinicalTrials.gov, number: NCT01366950
Prevention of low back pain and its consequences among nurses’ aides in elderly care
The study is registered as ISRCTN78113519
Efficacy of 'Tailored Physical Activity’ in reducing sickness absence among health care workers
ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01543984
Efficacy of ‘Tailored Physical Activity’ or ‘Chronic Pain Self-Management Program’ on return to work for sick-listed citizens
The trial is registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01356784
The health paradox of occupational and leisure-time physical activity
BACKGROUND: Occupational and leisure-time physical activity are considered to provide similar health benefits. The authors tested this hypothesis. METHODS: A representative sample of Danish employees (n=7144, 52% females) reported levels of occupational and leisure-time physical activity in 2005. Long-term sickness absence (LTSA) spells of ≥3 consecutive weeks were retrieved from a social-transfer payment register from 2005 to 2007. RESULTS: 341 …
Weight loss among female health care workers- a 1-year workplace based randomized controlled trial in the Finale-health study
NCT01015716
Cardiorespiratory fitness, cardiovascular workload and risk factors among cleaners; a cluster randomized worksite intervention
The study is registered as ISRCTN86682076
Occupational heavy lifting and risk of ischemic heart disease and all-cause mortality
These findings indicate an excessive risk for IHD from occupational heavy lifting among men, particularly among those with low occupational and leisure time physical activity
A randomised controlled trial among cleaners-Effects on strength, balance and kinesiophobia

Effects on musculoskeletal pain, work ability and sickness absence in a 1-year randomised controlled trial among cleaners

Work Design and the Labouring Body
Globalization and neoliberalism are having significant impacts upon the cleaning industry, as in the drive for greater work “efficiency”. One way in which cleaning companies have sought to increase efficiency is through the introduction of new equipment and forms of work organization. However, such moves appear to be having negative impacts upon cleaners’ bodies, and many report significant work‐related health problems. In light of this, here we …
