Gasoline Prices and Presidential Approval Ratings of the United States
We use random forests, a machine-learning technique, to formally examine the link between real gasoline prices and presidential approval ratings of the United States (US). Random forests make it possible to study this link in a completely data-driven way, such that nonlinearities in the data can easily be detected and a large number of control variables, in line with the extant literature, can be considered. Our empirical findings show that the l…
Political Geography and Stock Market Volatility: The Role of Political Alignment Across Sentiment Regimes
We study the nexus between political geography and stock market volatility by examining the interrelation between political geography and the predictive relation between the state‐ and aggregate‐level stock market volatility via recently constructed measures of political alignment. Using data for 1994–2023 and random forests, we show that the importance of the state‐level volatilities as drivers of aggregate volatility displays considerable varia…

Oil shocks and directional predictability of macroeconomic uncertainties of developed economies: Evidence from high‐frequency data
Using high‐frequency (daily) data on macroeconomic uncertainties and the partial cross‐quantilogram approach, we examine the directional predictability of disentangled oil‐price shocks for the entire conditional distribution of uncertainties of five advanced economies (Canada, Euro Area, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Our results show that oil‐demand, oil‐supply, and financial‐risk‐related shocks can predict the future path of…
Heroes at Home, Suspects Abroad? National and International Perceptions of Elite-Sports Success
It is often claimed that elite sport success increases national pride as well as the international prestige of a country. To scrutinize this broad-shed assumption, we draw on data from an online survey carried out around the Rio 2016 Olympics, including questions on success, national identity and attitudes towards other countries and athletes. Exploratory analyses of open questions reveal that successful athletes celebrated at home are often igno…
Forecasting changes of economic inequality: A boosting approach
We use a boosting algorithm to forecast changes in three income- and three consumption-based inequality measures. Unlike the existing literature, which basically deals with in-sample predictability, we analyze the role of large number of predictors in out-of-sample prediction of inequality growth. Further, deviating from the annual data-based literature on inequality, we study quarterly UK data covering the period from 1975Q1 to 2016Q1. We find t…
Match quality, crowding out, and crowding in: Empirical evidence for German sports clubs
Volunteering can be interpreted as a process of search. Using novel data from an online questionnaire study of volunteers of German sports clubs, we constructed a match quality index (MQI) that measures the outcome of this search process: the congruence of motives for doing volunteer work and the utility experiences derived from volunteer work. The MQI is higher on average for volunteers who would increase their work effort provided their sports …
Football clubs and philanthropy: An empirical analysis of volunteering, match quality, and donations
Using data collected by means of an online questionnaire of German football-club volunteers, we studied whether match quality helps to predict philanthropy as measured in terms of donations. Match quality is defined as the congruence of a volunteer's motives for volunteering with his or her utility experiences and can thus be expected to foster the production of volunteer satisfaction and eventually social capital. Social capital has a bonding an…
For the love of football: Using economic models of volunteering to study the motives of German football referees
Using data for a large sample of German football referees, we studied the motives for becoming a football referee. Based on a long modelling tradition in the literature on the economics of volunteering, we studied altruistic motives (public-goods model) versus non-altruistic (egoistic private-consumption and human-capital) motives. We differentiated between self-attributed and other-attributed motives. We found that altruistic motives on average …
Who bets on sports? Some further empirical evidence using German data
Given the rapid expansion of the German sports-betting market and recent changes in market regulations, it is interesting to reexamine the socioeconomic profile of German sports bettors: Who bets on sports? In order to analyse this question, this study used an online survey to collect data on sports-betting behaviour ( N=634). It modelled participation in sports betting by means of a logit model that recovers determinants of a person's propensity…

Much research has been done in earlier literature to analyze socioeconomic determinants of Olympic sporting success at the national level. We show that conventional determinants like population size and economic ressources have only a limited explanatory power for medal counts since 1970 in case of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). We argue that the reason why medal counts are decoupled from conventional socioeconomic determinants is that the…
Voluntary engagement in sports clubs: A behavioral model and some empirical evidence
Voluntary engagement is an important prerequisite for the production of club goods. Although unpaid, the individual decision for or against voluntary engagement can be regarded and formally modeled as a deliberate act of social exchange using elements of behavioral economics. We lay out a simple behavioral model that captures in a stylized way several motives (consumption of the club good, social recognition, human capital, etc.) that may explain…

Does the Ecb Have a Time‐inconsistency Problem? A Note
A standard time‐inconsistency model of monetary policy, extended to include a time‐varying natural rate of unemployment, implies cointegration between the inflation rate and the unemployment rate. An application of the model to data for the EMU countries does not yield strong evidence of cointegration. In addition, the sign of the estimated coefficient of cointegration is not in line with a sign restriction imposed by the time‐inconsistency model
Financial Market Integration and Business Cycle Volatility in a Monetary Union
This paper uses a dynamic general equilibrium two‐country sticky‐price model to analyze the implications of financial market integration for the propagation of asymmetric productivity and government spending shocks in a monetary union. Financial market integration has a small effect on the propagation of these shocks if households can only trade in risk‐free bonds. However, financial market integration has a more substantial effect on the propaga…
Foreign Capital and Economic Transformation: Risks and Benefits of Free Capital Flows
The advanced transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe abolished most restrictions to the free flow of capital. Subsequently, they have been able to attract quite substantial amounts of foreign capital. At the same time, the recent international financial crises have heightened concerns about a speedy liberalization of capital flows, and controls on short-term capital flows are frequently being advocated. The authors of this study trace …
