Sport plus the shooting
Research has long aimed to identify the effects of international sporting success or event hostship on nations. Overall findings suggest that tangible benefits are marginal at best. Still, some studies find that sport may have significant intangible effects, such as bolstering (short-term) feelings of national pride or happiness. Following this strand of research, the present paper asks whether international sporting success and/or hostship affec…
Sport and Human Rights Issues
In recent decades, the relationship between major sporting events (MSEs) and human rights has increasingly become a topic of debate and academic interest. Governments, politicians, and event stakeholders, including organizing bodies, frequently position MSEs as catalysts for various legacies. These include tangible outcomes such as economic growth and intangible effects like increased national pride. Proponents even argue that hosting MSEs may fo…
Inappropriate behavior and dropout from sport
Ethnic discrimination in Scandinavia
In this paper, we examine ethnic discrimination using sport as a laboratory. Applying a field experiment in the three Scandinavian countries—Sweden, Norway, and Denmark—we test whether foreign female minority groups experience greater rejection rates when seeking inclusion in amateur soccer clubs. Soccer coaches were contacted by e-mail using native and foreign-sounding names from selected groups, requesting to participate in trial practice. Prev…
Theorizing the form and impact of sport scandals
Sport scandals have attracted significant interest within and beyond the sociology of sport. However, developing a theoretical understanding of sport scandals has so far been neglected. Therefore, the two-fold purpose of this conceptual paper is to outline a theoretical model for understanding the form of a sport scandal, and to construct two typical sport scandals that can assist us in theorizing and differentiating how sport scandals may have v…
Commercialization, Governance Problems, and the Future of European Football—Or Why the European Super League Is Not a Solution to the Challenges Facing Football
Recently, 12 European football clubs launched the idea of creating the European Super League. After massive protests from fans, the Union of European Football Associations, politicians, coaches, and players, the initiative was stopped. In this commentary, the authors reflect on some of the problems facing football and argue that the creation of a European Super League is not a solution to the challenges. However, European football does face probl…
Dual careers and academic achievements
In the literature on Dual Careers (DC) there has been an ongoing debate on whether there is a trade-off between being an elite athlete and achieving academically. Is the time needed to compete at the highest level a barrier to academic achievement? Or can knowledge and expertise obtained from an elite sporting career be transferred into academic performance? In this paper, we aim to answer these questions using a unique database on talented young…
The organization of club football in Denmark – a contemporary profile
This article provides an understanding of the organization of Danish club football, including both grassroots and professional activities. We do this by analysing how it has developed and how it relates to four basic social orders viewed as ideal types; civil society, market, state and associations. Our study is grounded in document analysis, a questionnaire survey and existing knowledge of sports clubs and, in particular, football clubs. Our fin…
The impact of Formula 1 on regional economies in Europe
The tangible effects of hosting major sporting events have been thoroughly examined in recent years. The consensus among scholars is that the effects on tourism, inbound foreign investments and gross domestic product (GDP) from hosting, for example, the Olympic Games or the football World Cup are absent. Further, only a few studies have been conducted on one of the most commercially successful (major) sporting events: Formula 1 motor racing. This…
Hosting major sports events
While the literature on the economic impacts of major sports events has grown considerably over the years, the question of utilisation of venues built for these events after the party is over has received little attention. This article fills some of the gaps in the literature. By means of a Stadium Utilisation Index, it measures the post-event utilisation of venues that were constructed of significantly refurbished to host major sports events in …
For better or worse? A study of institutional responses to sports competitive pressure in Danish pro soccer 2001–2013
The open European pro league structure is characterized by a certain sports competitive pressure that puts the professional clubs that compete in them at risk. This paper uses a case study of Danish professional soccer to show how the clubs in the best Danish league have responded to sports competitive pressure by diversifying their activities into other business areas. Deploying an institutional framework combined with Altman's Z-score measure o…
Winners and losers in Danish football
This article deals with the commercialization of European and Danish football, focusing on the Danish male first-tier clubs. Based on the argument drawn from systems theory that sport serves as a mirror system in (late-) modern society, Danish football clubs are measured against a simple matrix of main performance outputs in relation to the key factors of this function. The approach represents a sociological supplement to the ordinary performance…
