  • A contextualised review of genomic evidence for gene flow events between Papuans and Indigenous Australians in Cape York, Queensland

  • Giving it a burl: Towards the integration of genetics, isotope chemistry, and osteoarchaeology in Cape York, Tropical North Queensland, Australia

    M Collard, Sally Wasef et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 27

In this paper we outline a worked example of the combined use of genetic data and archaeological evidence. The project focuses on Queensland's Cape York Peninsula and has two goals. One is to shed new light on the population \nhistory of the region. The other is to develop a methodology to facilitate \nrepatriation of the remains of Aboriginal Australians. After providing some \nbackground to the project and outlining its main activities, we summ…

  • A genomic history of Aboriginal Australia

    Open Access•Anna‐Sapfo Malaspinas, Anna-Sapfo Malaspinas et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2016

The population history of Aboriginal Australians remains largely uncharacterized. Here we generate high-coverage genomes for 83 Aboriginal Australians (speakers of Pama–Nyungan languages) and 25 Papuans from the New Guinea Highlands. We find that Papuan and Aboriginal Australian ancestors diversified 25–40 thousand years ago (kya), suggesting pre-Holocene population structure in the ancient continent of Sahul (Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania).…

  • The Importance of Europe in the Global Campaign Against Terrorism

Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2006•Cited by: 3

Terrorism and how to respond to it looms large in the current transatlantic debate, with the Europeans often being accused of failing to recognise terrorism as the major strategic issue of the early twenty-first century and thus putting their own security as well as that of others at risk. This is both true and false. It is true in the sense that fifteen years after the end of the Cold War, the Europeans still lack a global strategic vision, neve…

  • Consent and Sexual Violence in Canadian Public Discourse: Reflections on Ewanchuk

    Open Access•Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Law and…•2001•References: 5

• Setting the Parameters — Public and Political Opinion on Police Reform

Open Access•Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright et al.•CHAPTER•Policing and Conflict in Northern…•2000

As was shown in Chapter 1, the issues of policing and justice administration are central to all dimensions of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Creating change in these areas, therefore, could well serve as one of the most important confidence building measures in relation to an overall settlement. However, it is equally important that this change is appropriate and sustainable. Change that is imposed simply for the sake of change, or change that…

  • The Importance of Policing

Open Access•Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright et al.•CHAPTER•Policing and Conflict in Northern…•2000

On Good Friday 1998, Northern Ireland’s political parties signed an agreement which was subsequently approved by a majority of Irish people, both north and south of the border. Since then, while there have been the horrors of three boys murdered in Ballymoney and 29 people murdered in Omagh, the parties have inched awkwardly towards implementing many of the Agreement’s provisions. One of the most sensitive and difficult areas of the Agreement’s p…

  • Some Options

Open Access•Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright et al.•CHAPTER•Policing and Conflict in Northern…•2000

Northern Ireland is not the only society to suffer from internal cleavages (see, for example, Lijphart, 1977a, 1977b, 1968, 1969 and 1971; Dahl, 1971; Eckstein, 1966),1 nor is it the first to undertake a major review of policing. In addition, Northern Ireland is part of the liberal, capitalist world which encompasses a managerial culture that seeks to adopt ‘best practice’ techniques from wherever they may be found. This chapter seeks to explore …

  • Best Practice and Reform

Open Access•Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright et al.•CHAPTER•Policing and Conflict in Northern…•2000

Even from the short discussion in Chapter 2, it is possible to gain some understanding of the complexity involved in policing societies in which there are major differences in beliefs about ideological, political and sociological issues. Add to this the many ‘local’ features of the problems identified in Chapter 1 and the divisiveness identified in Chapter 3 and the picture which emerges is one of extreme difficulty facing those charged with crea…

  • Police Reform in Northern Ireland

Open Access•Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright et al.•CHAPTER•Policing and Conflict in Northern…•2000

What remains is the fairly tall order of assessing the options for the future of policing in Northern Ireland. At the most basic level, there are two options: the RUC could be disbanded and a completely new service or services established, or the existing RUC could be reformed and continue as the sole provider or as one of a number of policing services. Disbanding the RUC does not seem to be an option at present. This claim can be made for a vari…

    Open Access•Jennifer L Wright•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 13

  • The provisional IRA cease‐fire: The end and beginning of history

    Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•1997•References: 1

The breakdown of the paramilitaries’ cease‐fires in Northern Ireland does not hide some significant longer‐term trends. The most significant of these is that the legitimacy surrounding the Provisional IRA's violence has been sharply eroded. This is because the British and Irish governments have converged their positions, lessening the political space in which the Provisional IRA can manoeuvre. A second important trend confirms the British governm…

  • Propaganda and justice administration in Northern Ireland

Jennifer L Wright, Joanne Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•1991•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article seeks to explore the propaganda advantages that the Provisional IRA is able to generate from some of the British government's responses to it. Like all authorities facing a sustained terrorist problem, the British government has made changes to its legislation. But we discuss how the PIRA is able to use this legislation to attach credibility to its cause. Two further areas of British government policy that the PIRA is able to exploit…
