Premature athletic disengagement of elite Greek gymnasts
The methodologies used in the earlier phase of quantitative research carried out on the disengagement from sport (Mihovilovic, 1968; Sands, 1978; Brown, 1983; Greendorfer, 1983; Kleiber & Greendorfer, 1983; Greendorfer & Blinde, 1985) were found to have weaknesses. Disengagement from sport is examined from a phenomenological perspective. This perspective permits committed adult athletes to explain in their own time and their own words why they ceased participating in formally organized competitive sport. Thirty-four former advanced and elite athletes were interviewed. The constructed case study method provides the opportunity to examine causal relationships among all factors leading to disengagement from sp…

In contrast to previous quantitative research on the disengagement from sport which suffers from methodological weakness, in the present research it is argued that disengagement from sport can best be examined from a social action perspective, especially from a phenomenological perspective. Moreover, unlike previous research which presented a static and functional view of the world, former athletes in the present study made suggestions for a bett…
