Resource nationalism among Russian academics: A centre‐periphery pattern
Under Putin's tenure, the geopolitical representation of Russia as an ‘energy superpower’ has become a powerful mainstay for the restoration of a global status and a revanchist foreign policy. This article seeks to assess the extent to which such a nationalist narrative is prevalent among Russian academics in the oil and gas sector. Using a survey administered to research and teaching staff in selected industrial universities in 2021, we found pa…
Research transparency and openness
In this editorial, we present the new guidelines for research transparency and open data when publishing in European Political Science. These standards are drawn from the Transparency and Openness Promotion guidelines. In introducing these guidelines, we take an opportunity to reflect on the importance of research transparency, the challenges that it faces, and offer a few suggestions to encourage and foster a culture of open data
Political equality in unequal territories: The impact of territorial inequalities on voter turnout in Italy’s regional elections
This study investigates how disparities in the distribution of economic, social, and institutional capital across territories affect voter turnout. Analysis of Italian regional elections held from 2003 to 2021 reveals that electoral participation is higher in more economically developed regions than in less developed ones. However, the effect of economic conditions becomes more tangible in territories featuring high levels of social interconnecte…
Sovereignty of what and for whom? The political mobilisation of sovereignty claims by the Italian Lega and Fratelli d’Italia
This article looks at the relationship between conflicts of sovereignty and patterns of national party competition, by focusing on the electoral support for two Italian populist radical right parties (PRRPs), the Lega ( the League , Lega) and Fratelli d’Italia ( Brothers of Italy , FdI). Using public opinion data, the study finds that the conflicts of sovereignty represent a distinct and multidimensional set of attitudes related to voting prefere…
The future of the Mediterranean agri-food systems: Trends and perspectives from a Delphi survey
The Mediterranean region is widely acknowledged as one of the most exposed in the world to the effects of climate change, water scarcity, biodiversity loss and land degradation, coupled with a nutrition transition of its populations. In such a context, to explore the evolution of the region is of both political and theoretical interest. This study presents the result of a scenario-building exercise, based on a Delphi method – an interactive forec…
Paranoid styles and innumeracy: Implications of a conspiracy mindset on Europeans' misperceptions about immigrants
Innumeracy, that is, the inability to deal with numbers and provide correct estimates about political issues, is reported to be widespread among the public. Yet, despite the recognition that a conspiracy mindset is an increasingly common phenomenon in Western democracies, this has not been considered as a potential correlate of innumeracy. Using data from an online sample of respondents across 10 European countries, we show that those with a high…
The Framing Territorial Demands (FraTerr) dataset: A novel approach to conceptualizing and measuring regionalist actors’ territorial strategies
This article introduces a new dataset on regionalist actors’ territorial demands and frames in Europe. The FraTerr dataset advances on existing datasets by proposing a more fine-grained understanding of regionalist actors’ territorial demands, and is the first to provide comparative data on how these are framed. Methodologically, it develops an original coding scheme for the qualitative content analysis of political documents. Empirically, this a…
Sovereignism and Populism: Citizens, Voters and Parties in Western European Democracies
Sharing the burden in a free riders’ land: The EU migration and asylum policy in the views of public opinion and politicians
New divisions have emerged within the European Union over the handling of the recent migration crisis. While both frontline and favoured destination countries are called upon to deal with the number of migrants looking for international protection and better living conditions, no consensus has been reached yet on the quota‐based mechanisms for the relocation of refugees and financial help to exposed countries proposed by the EU. Such mechanisms p…
For whom the sovereignist Bell Tolls?’ Individual determinants of support for sovereignism in ten European countries
Sovereignism and populism are increasingly making headlines, but their nature and definition still remain controversial. Moreover, while literature has often treated the two concepts separately, they are increasingly associated in the current representations and narratives of political events. In this paper, we argue that sovereignism is one of the recurrent and core themes of populism, and pre-exists it. We conceive of sovereignism as a multidim…
Sovereignist wine in populist bottles? An introduction
Sovereignist claims are on the rise–in Europe, the USA, and beyond. In dealing with processes such as globalization and supranational integration, which have progressively shifted powers and competencies away from nation states, these transformations have created a fertile terrain for reactions against the sources of such insecurity, which find full expression in the sovereignist claims to ‘take back control’, that is to say to return to the trad…
Measuring party strategies on the territorial dimension: A method based on content analysis
This article proposes an innovative coding scheme for the content analysis of party manifestos, one designed to estimate party strategies on the territorial dimension and based on a solid theoretical framework. It builds on existing scholarly efforts on party positioning, while adding further theoretical and methodological insights. The proposed coding scheme first conceives of party strategies as the combination of three tools, namely the manipu…
A dwarf among giants? Party competition between ethno-regionalist and state-wide parties on the territorial dimension: The case of Italy (1963–2013)
Scholars of party politics have recently examined the influence of niche parties on the dynamics of party competition. In particular, drawing on the ‘Position, Salience and Ownership’ (PSO) model, it has been argued that when a new niche actor enters the political arena, it seeks to introduce a new policy dimension into political debate and simultaneously affects the competitive strategies of mainstream actors. By using manifesto data, this artic…
