Zero Measure Sraffian Economies
New theoretical and empirical evidence reveals that the actual input–output table economies of single production, which are usually studied in the value–capital theory literature, are almost similar to non-diagonalizable, triangular and both uncontrollable and unobservable (in the sense of Kalman) economies producing only one basic commodity and non-self-reproducing non-basics (in the sense of Sraffa), the immense majority of which are pure consu…
The Covid-19 multiplier effects of tourism on the Greek economy
Using a multisectoral model and data from the Supply and Use Tables, this article estimates the COVID-19 multiplier effects of tourism on gross domestic product (GDP), total employment, and trade balance of the Greek economy. The results indicate that a—not-unexpected—decrease of international travel receipts in the range of 3.5 to 10.5 billion euros would lead to a decrease in GDP of about 2.0% to 6.0%, a decrease in the levels of employment of …
Competing Theories of Value
This paper is based on a spectral–controllability analysis of the Sraffian price system and develops a relevant reconstruction of the theory of value. It shows that (i) the hitherto competing theories of value correspond to specific complex plane locations of the eigenvalues of the vertically integrated technical coefficients matrix; and (ii) the real-world economies cannot be coherently analyzed in terms of the traditional theory of value (class…
Inter-sectoral analysis of the Greek economy and the Covid-19 multiplier effects
Using a multi-sector model, with joint-products and heterogeneous labour, and data from the Supply and Use Tables, this paper analyses the inter-sectoral structure of the Greek economy and estimates the COVID-19 multiplier effects on this economy. It is found that the economy is heavily dependent on imports of industrial commodities, while significant multiplier effects are concentrated, primarily, in services and, secondarily, in the primary pro…
Less Is More
Capital theory and the price effects consequent upon changes in the distributive variables hold center stage when it comes to the internal consistency of both classical and neoclassical theories of value. This paper briefly reviews the literature and then focuses on the detected skew eigenvalue distribution of the vertically integrated technical coefficients matrices of actual economies. The findings prompt the use of the Schur triangularization …
Norm Bounds and A Homographic Approximation for the Wage–Profit Curve
This paper provides lower and upper norm bounds for the wage–profit curve in linear single‐product systems. Thus, it also constructs an algebraically simple (i.e. homographic) and empirically powerful approximation to that curve. The results finally suggest that actual economies tend to behave as ‘corn‐tractor’ systems with respect to the shape of the wage–profit curve and, at the same time, behave as three‐industry systems with respect to the sh…
Falling Rate of Profit and Mass of Profits
This paper shows that the mass of profits may be strictly increasing even when the rate of profit is strictly decreasing. Thus, a recent ‘long-wave version’ of the falling rate of profit theory of crisis is called into question
Bienenfeld's Approximation of Production Prices and Eigenvalue Distribution
This paper tests Bienenfeld's polynomial approximation of production prices using data from ten symmetric input–output tables of five European economies. The empirical results show that the quadratic formula works extremely well and the degree of its accuracy is connected to the actual distribution of the eigenvalues of the matrices of vertically integrated technical coefficients. It then follows that the number of vertically integrated industrie…
Total Requirements for Gross Output and Intersectoral Linkages
This paper argues that the concept of total requirements for gross output, as well as some aspects of the so-called ‘hypothetical extraction method’, was introduced by Vladimir K. Dmitriev in his essay, published in 1898, on the theory of value in Ricardo
Decomposing the Changes in Production Prices into "Capital-Intensity" and "Price" Effects
This paper deals with the changes in prices of production induced by variations in income distribution on the basis of a linear model of production with circulating capital and homogeneous labour. It is shown that the total effect of income distribution on prices can be decomposed into a “capital-intensity” and a “price” effect and that, in actual economies, the former is expected to dominate the latter. In order to obtain a concrete idea of the …
