  • Male-female differences: A computer simulation

    Richard F Martell, David M Lane et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1996

Science and Politics of Comparing Women and Men (Eagly, March 1995) raised an important question: What constitutes a practically significant sex effect? The practice of relying on proportion of variance measures (e.g., r 2, tt~ 2) to address this question has been judged inappropriate, for such measures are not intuitively accessible and can mislead researchers into ignoring the practical significance of small effects. In response, more easily un…

  • Predicting the Skilled Use of Hierarchical Menus With the Keystroke-Level Model

David Lane, David M Lane et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•1993

This article addresses a key question in the application of Card, Moran, and Newell's (1983) keystroke-level model to software in which users specify a command by working through a system of hierarchical menus. For example, to insert a row in Lotus 1-2-3®, the user makes three menu choices: W for worksheet, I for insert, and R for row. In the keystroke-level model, it is assumed that a time-consuming mental operation precedes each command. The qu…

  • Sex differences in the personality and cognitive correlates of spatial ability

Jill L Waggett, David M Lane•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1990

Ozer (1987) found that spatial visualization correlated with personality and verbal ability for girls but not for boys. To account for this finding, he hypothesized that "the causes of individual differences in spatial visualization [may be] different for the two sexes" (Ozer, 1987, p. 134). Although Ozer's conclusion is an intriguing one, it should be viewed with at least some skepticism until the discrepancies between his data and those of othe…

  • Testing Main Effects Of Continuous Variables In Nonadditive Models

    David M Lane•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1981

Problems in testing main effects when there is interaction are discussed. A method by which main effects can be tested independently of the interaction is developed and compared with the hierarchical method. The hierarchical method is shown to be inadequate, as it does not provide sufficient control of the type I error rate. The alternative method provides control of the type I error rate, but is quite conservative
