Discursive hysteresis
This paper is a Discourse Analysis investigation on discursive hysteresis, a phenomenon that occurs when there is a chronological mismatch between a political actor’s discourse and the present social context he operates upon, whereby elements from a previous discursive structure persist even though they have become outdated. Even though the concept of hysteresis has long been applied in the fields of Economics and Sociology, it remains surprising…
Towards a Renovation of the Laclauian Paradigm
This article provides a renovation of Ernesto Laclau’s theories of political competition and collective identity-building for their better application at an empirical level. It does so not as a critique but as a way to make the Laclauian approach more operational and rigorous from a methodological perspective. The key goal is to make available a form of discourse analysis that centers on the political sphere and has two key characteristics. The f…
The Anthropocene as a historical hyperobject
The notion of the Anthropocene has gained momentum in many academic disciplines in the last couple of decades. Yet it seems that history, both as a human science and a political frame, fails to come to terms with this new geological epoch in which the distinction between humanity and nature blurs. Employing the concept of ‘hyperobject’, this article argues that such collision is not an accident or the result of historiography lagging behind. Rath…
A certain idea of France’s past
Contrary to what common sense suggests, the meaning of historical figures and events is not fixed once and for ever. Instead, the battle over history plays an important role at an identity-building and political competition level, thus becoming what post-structuralist literature refers to as 'a site of struggle'. This article intends to study such aspects of history through the analysis of Rassemblement National and its leader, Marine Le Pen. It …
Alain de Benoist, ethnopluralism and the cultural turn in racism
The purpose of this article is to analyse critically the idea of ethnopluralism (also known as ethno-differentialism and droit à la difference) as formulated by Alain de Benoist, one of the founding fathers of the Nouvelle Droite and one of the most important far-right intellectuals of the last decades. Rueda locates this ideal as part of what will be called ‘the cultural turn in racism’, that is, the passage from biological and pseudo-scientific…
Is Populism a Political Strategy? A Critique of an Enduring Approach
The political-strategic approach is one of the most employed frameworks within the methodologically heterogeneous subfield of populism studies. In the last two decades, it has contributed to the analysis of populism both in Latin America and the United States and, more recently, in Western and Eastern Europe. That being said, a close inspection of its axioms and its conceptualization of the phenomenon shows that it is built on ill-conceived premi…
