Post-American Mormonism in the Changing World Order
This article will explore the impact of the changing world order on global religion. Specifically, it will analyze the challenges and opportunities that the upcoming post-American world order will have on Mormonism, which has been described as the quintessential American religion. In doing so the article will answer the question: How can an America-centric church become a global faith in a post-American world? This will be accomplished by looking…
Small states and new status opportunities
Small states can never take their existence for granted. Due to their smallness and limited resources, they have to find innovative ways to be visible. For small states, one way to compensate is to increase their status. Little attention has been paid to European small states' foreign policy in Africa. Estonia, a small country with only one embassy on the continent, has begun to build status as an innovative partner of several African countries. …
Punching above their weight, but why? Explaining Denmark and Estonia in the transatlantic relationship
This article asks why Denmark and Estonia have eagerly attempted to ‘punch above their weight’ in the transatlantic relationship since the end of the Cold War and shows how they differ in their strategies to do so. Using neoclassical realism as a theoretical point of departure, the article explains how a combination of changing constraints in the strategic environment and elite interpretations of how these changes affected national security resul…
Developing status as a small state
The study of small state foreign policy has traditionally focused on size and the influence it plays on small state behaviour. This article instead uses the social identity theory to evaluate small state behaviour. Using the concept of status, Estonia's bilateral development cooperation with Georgia and Moldova is evaluated. Despite Estonia's limited resources, the impact of its aid was significant in terms of boosting Estonia's status in the eye…
Small States and Big Ideas
This article focuses on the ability of militarily aligned small states to function as norm entrepreneurs to increase their own state interests. The scholarship on small state foreign policy is growing. This article builds on that scholarship by focusing on the promising, yet underdeveloped field of norm building. While small state scholars have researched norm-building capabilities in non-aligned states, research has not been done on the ability …
Soft Security Threats and Small States
This article will attempt to establish what is the relationship between domestic and international strategies taken by small states. To do this, Estonia will be used as a case study to examine how it has reacted to cyber-security, energy security, and national identity security. This work will take a qualitative critical approach that transcends common ontologies and epistemologies in International Relations. This will enable us to look at the re…
Russian Energy Transit Policy in the Baltic Sea Region
This article critically analyzes Russia’s ‘aggressive’ nationalist energy transit policy in the Baltic Sea region to offer an alternative understanding of the consequences for the Baltic states. Four case studies will be used to analyze Russia’s energy transit policy in the Baltic Sea region. First, the 2003 closure of the oil pipeline in the port city Venstpils in Latvia, second, the closure of the Druzbha oil pipeline in Lithuania in 2006, thir…
