  • The Changing Face of the AfD Electorate—A Longitudinal Analysis from 2013 to 2022

    Open Access•Christoph Kühling, Frederik Springer et al.•ARTICLE•Politische Vierteljahresschrift.…•2025•References: 15

The more than ten-year history of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is marked by continuous programmatic and personnel development. Starting out as an economically liberal, Eurosceptic party, the AfD quickly developed into a radical right party, which in recent years has increasingly moved in the direction of right-wing extremism. Previous analyses of the AfD’s changing electorate have only captured the party’s transformation from a Eurosce…

  • Do Recall Elections Undermine Political Support? Insights from the Recall of the Mayor of Frankfurt in 2022

    Open Access•Frederik Springer, Markus Klein et al.•ARTICLE•German Politics•2025•References: 25

Concerns about the impact of recall referendums on political support have not been empirically examined so far. For this purpose, we conducted a post-election survey of around 800 respondents in Frankfurt after the mayoral election in March 2023 which followed a successful recall in November 2022. First, there is overwhelming support for recall elections, with 87% of respondents in favour. Even supporters of the recalled candidate rarely dislike …

  • The Impact of Party Quotas on Women’s Political Ambition

    Frederik Springer, Markus Klein et al.•ARTICLE•Women & Politics•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 39

Do women's motives for joining a political party depend on the implementation of a gender quota for party offices and electoral lists? Based on multiple waves of the German Party Membership Studies, we address this issue using survey data for about 5,000 female party members. We find that women's probability of joining a party because of their political ambition, i.e. attaining a public or party office, slightly improves with the quota size. But …

  • The Change of Motives to Become and to be a Party Member. An Empirical Analysis of the German Party Membership Studies 1998, 2009 and 2017

Open Access•Yvonne Lüdecke, Markus Klein et al.•ARTICLE•KZfSS Kölner Zeitschrift für…•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 27

In this paper, the thesis is put forward that selective outcome incentives for party membership gain relevance over time. Two possible mechanisms are identified as the cause of this increase in importance: a supply-side mechanism based on processes of societal change that took place through generational succession and a demand-side mechanism focusing on shifts in the self-image and organizational structure of political parties. The supply-side me…

  • Getting in, moving up, dropping out. The threefold social selectivity of participation in political parties – an empirical analysis of party members, former party members and the general public in Ger…

Frederik Springer, Markus Klein et al.•ARTICLE•European Politics and Society•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 16

Does the probability to join a political party, to become a party functionary, and to leave a party depend on individuals’ socioeconomic status? Political parties are central mediating actors between the population and the state; thus, it is reasonable to assume that unequal participation within parties fosters unequal political representation. However, due to data limitations no study has hitherto examined the social selectivity of the whole par…

  • The Individual-Level Determinants of German Party Membership

    Hanna Hoffmann, Frederik Springer•ARTICLE•German Politics•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 24

Why do citizens join German parties? Do specific attributes and abilities play a determinant role in participation in political parties? The German Party Membership Study of 2009 enables us to answer these questions. On the basis of the telephone survey, we will address these issues by way of a systematic comparison of current party members with fellow citizens who never joined a party. For the purpose of analysing the individual-level determinan…
