Lessons From Rojava for the Paradigm of Social Ecology
This essay addresses two related questions raised by the editors of the research topic for “Beyond the Frontiers of Political Science: Is Good Governance Possible in Cataclysmic Times?” In particular, it explores: 1) how we can identify new tools and perspectives from which to address the multiple and mutually reinforcing problems accumulating around climate change; and 2) what institutional alternatives to the nation-state need to be created and…
Conflict in Catalonia: A Sociological Approximation
This article follows the approach originally pioneered by Juan Linz to the empirical study of nationalism. We make use of original survey data to situate the emergent social division around the question of independence within a broader constellation of power relations. We bring into focus a variety of demographic, cultural, behavioral and attitudinal indicators with which this division is associated. We emphasize the special salience of language …
The nation as hegemonic project
This article argues that the nation is best conceived as a hegemonic project. It starts with a discussion of the dialectical intertwining of the categories of nationhood and nationalism, and continues with a treatment of the analytical distinction and historical relationship between states and nations. It sketches the rise of and problems with the principle and practice of 'self-determination' in the post-Wilsonian world, and seeks to problematiz…
Austerity politics and constitutional crisis in Spain
This article explores the political consequences of austerity politics in Spain. It argues that the economic-cum-political crisis in Spain has brought to the surface underlying structural weaknesses of its constitutional edifice accumulated over the past decades. The article sketches the parameters of the current crisis, and provides an account of the dynamic process of crisis and breakdown of Spain's 'constitutional regime.' It focuses on two in…
Constitutional Politics and Religious Accommodation: Lessons from Spain
This article sketches the struggles over and the shifting role of Catholicism in the Spanish body politic. It begins by providing a brief overview of the deep historical ties between Catholicism and Spanish identity. It continues by recounting the dialectical process through which a serious social cleavage on the role of religion in politics emerged and percolated over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This cleavage ulti…
Blocked Articulation and Nationalist Hegemony in Catalonia
This article focuses on the representation of preferences with regards to language policy in Catalonia. By comparing social surveys produced by a variety of organizations with its own data, this paper demonstrates that there is a substantial gap between the political preferences of significant segments of the general population of Catalonia and the political preferences of their representatives at the Parliament of Catalonia. In particular, the l…

Franquism as Authoritarianism: Juan Linz and his Critics
This article critically assesses the debate surrounding Juan Linz's famous depiction of the Franco regime as an example and point of departure for conceptualising authoritarianism as a distinct type of nondemocratic political regime. It analyses the strengths and weaknesses of six main objections to Linz's framework and account: (1) the objection to his use of an abstract ideal-typical framework; (2) the objection to his depiction of the absence …
The constitution and the politics of national identity in Spain
The 1978 Spanish Constitution enshrined the recognition of linguistic, cultural, and some degree of ‘national’ pluralism in the country and outlined procedural mechanisms for the creation of regional ‘autonomies’, which has given rise to a de facto asymmetrical federal state. This article begins by analyzing the compromise over issues of national identity embedded in the Constitution and the process by which this was forged. It highlights the art…
Is there more assimilation in Catalonia than in the Basque Country? Analysing dynamics of assimilation in nationalist contexts
This article builds on recent attempts in political science to illuminate the ‘micro‐level’ mechanisms of identity formation. It analyses the dynamics of assimilation in two similar contexts with extremely salient regional‐nationalist movements: Catalonia and the Basque Country. It poses the question: In which of the two regions has there been more assimilation of demographically significant, internal‐immigrant segments of the population? It test…
Against the Thesis of the “Civic Nation”: The Case of Catalonia in Contemporary Spain
This article combats the empirical deficiencies, theoretical lacunae, and normative biases that beset the literature on nationalism. It focuses on the context of Catalonia in Spain. It documents the diffusion of divergent modes of national identification across different segments of Catalan society. It employs such thick-descriptive detail to challenge the dominant depiction of Catalan nationalism as a “civic nationalism.” It demonstrates that th…
