The effect of electoral performance on party renomination in national and independent local parties
The process of selecting candidates for representative assemblies is a key aspect of democratic governance. We examine how political parties, particularly in quasi-open list proportional representation systems like the Netherlands, weigh candidates’ previous electoral performance in renomination decisions. The Netherlands Local Manifesto Project. Infrastructure for studying local party politics
The Netherlands Local Manifesto Project (NLMP) collects manifestos of parties running in local elections in the Netherlands. It is not just the largest collection of party manifestos running in local elections in the world, but actually is the largest collection of party manifestos globally. This article introduces the NLMP: we briefly introduce the specificities of local government in the Netherlands. We then explain the structure of the data se…
Scrutiny and policymaking in local councils: How Parties Use Council Tools
In recent years, political scientists have gained greater understanding of how national parliamentary parties use their parliamentary tools: that is under what conditions they submit parliamentary questions or amendments to legislation. We know surprisingly little about how local councillors use the tools at their disposal: under what conditions do these local councillors submit questions to the local executive? When do they submit amendments to …
Geographical Representation Under a Single Nationwide District: The Case of the Netherlands
Previous studies have demonstrated the common occurrence of constituency focus in parliamentary questions, which is most often attributed to electoral incentives. If an electoral system makes use of a single nationwide district, however, these district‐oriented electoral incentives do not apply. MPs may still substantively represent a geographical region, because they are motivated to stand up for a specific region for other reasons. This article…
Turnout in European parliament elections 1979–2019
The European Parliament (EP) has seen a gradual increase in its powers since the introduction of direct elections in 1979. Scholars have focused on both individual-level and aggregate factors to explain turnout rates in EP elections over time, including increased levels of EU politicization and the rise in support for Eurosceptic parties. However, one strand of analysis seems to partially have been overlooked: Some earlier research on EP election…
