Open Access•Liz Ota, Dora Carias Vega et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2026

Small-scale forestry can contribute to smallholder livelihoods and to addressing the gap in the supply of wood products, but challenges of developing the sector are also numerous. Whitewood is a species of interest in Vanuatu, where there is unmet demand for whitewood products, but whitewood plantations are still very limited and the future volume and benefits it can bring to smallholders largely unknown. • Friedrich Halm’s Earliest Extant, Melodramatic Novelle, St. Sylvesterabend

    Open Access•Tony Page, T E Page•ARTICLE•Manusya Journal of Humanities•2020

To date there has been no scholarly exploration of the genesis and nature of Friedrich Halm’s earliest extant Novelle, St. Sylvesterabend ( New Year’s Eve ). The incenses and perfumes that are produced from agarwood have been valued for centuries and used by many cultures for spiritual, opulent, and aphrodisiac purposes. Agarwood is highly revered in the seminal t…

  • From Morality to Medical Danger

    Open Access•Tony Page, T E Page•ARTICLE•Manusya Journal of Humanities•2015

The trajectory of the ideological-literary anti-vivisection movement is traced across three successive English novels (by Wilkie Collins, Gertrude Colmore, and Walter Hadwen) and shown first to be moralitycentred and character-focussed in its directionality, but increasingly moving towards scientific exposure of the practice as methodologically flawed and dangerously misleading for the human patient. This movement of narrowing focus upon the medi…

  • Friedrich Halm and the Demon of Sex

    Open Access•Tony Page, T E Page•ARTICLE•Manusya Journal of Humanities•2013

This paper explores the attitudes towards sexuality embodied in Friedrich Halm’s early Novelle, Ein Abend zu L., and particularly investigates the potentially positive view of homosexuality which it contains. The paper also considers the divergences between this Novelle and its putative inspiration, Alain- René Lesage’s novel, Le Diable boiteux
