The Patron and the Orchestrator
This article examines the dual influence of the state on corporate R&D investments in China, focusing on how local-level political connections impact the national government’s capacity to orchestrate innovation through strategic financial support. Building on the developmental state theory and the literature on the subnational institutional dynamics in China, we explore the tension associated with firms’ connections with local governments and the…
Whither geographic proximity? Bypassing local R&D units in foreign university collaboration
MNCs often engage in international research collaborations with foreign universities through one of their central R&D laboratories (at headquarters or elsewhere) even though they operate a local R&D unit close to that university, and hence forego the benefits of geographic proximity and local collaboration. Drawing on the knowledge-based theory of the firm, we hypothesize that the choice between distant and local collaboration systematically rela…
Exploring the spatial dimensions of nanotechnology development in China
This paper investigates the factors driving nanotechnology development in Chinese regions. Advanced regions of China have spearheaded the country’s rapid growth in nanotechnology, aided by substantial support from the government. While this head start could potentially perpetuate regional inequalities through agglomeration economies, the results suggest that knowledge spillovers exert a substantially greater impact in peripheral regions compared …
Internationalisation Efforts of Chinese and Indian Companies
In this paper we aim to understand the internationalisation strategies of companies from I ndia and C hina. In particular we focus on two external organisational modes: mergers and acquisitions ( M & A s) and strategic technology alliances. Using a large longitudinal data set we show that G reater C hina and I ndia are emerging as important players in worldwide M & A s and alliances whereas the traditional dominance of the US in both these activi…
PATSTAT database for patent-based research
To capture innovation, scholars have traditionally used a variety of measures. In this regard, primary data collected through surveys provide valuable insights into product and process dimensions o
Productivity gains, technology spillovers and trade
The importance of R&D spillovers for productivity growth has been well documented in the literature. While studies in the developed country context have focused extensively on sectoral linkages, research on North-South spillovers has largely been confined to the aggregate level. This paper assesses the contribution of international R&D spillovers to manufacturing performance in Indonesia at the sectoral level. Drawing on OECD and Indonesian data …
