This study examines the effectiveness of a Community-Based Educational Intervention (CBEI) designed to improve learning outcomes among accompanied children of internal labour migrants in Varanasi, India. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Process-Person-Context-Time (PPCT) framework, the twelve-week intervention integrated structured literacy and numeracy instruction, peer mentoring, and parental engagement. A sequential explanatory mixed-m…
Survival pedagogy, compliance inversion, and concurrent role fracture
This study examines the lived experiences of teachers in rural multigrade classrooms in Uttar Pradesh, India, where instructional, administrative, and caregiving demands converge. Using a phenomenological approach based on in-depth interviews with nine educators, the research identifies three conceptual insights: survival pedagogy, compliance inversion, and concurrent role fracture. Survival pedagogy describes improvised teaching practices arisin…
Impact of out-of-pocket health expenditure on poverty in India
As per the World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (2021), approximately 12.92% of India’s population was below the poverty line in 2018, based on the international poverty line of $2.15 per day (PPP 2017). According to the National Health Authority (NHA) Estimates for 2018–19, the out-of-pocket health expenditure (OOPHE) share of total health expenditure (THE) was reported as 48.2% for the entire population, a decline from 64.2% in 2013–14. T…
Trends and socioeconomic-spatial inequalities in hypertension among Muslim women in India, 2015–2021
Introduction Hypertension is a growing public health concern in India, but little is known about how socioeconomic and spatial inequalities shape hypertension risk within religious minority populations. This study examines trends and inequalities in hypertension among Muslim women aged 15–49 years in India. Methods The analysis uses nationally representative data from NFHS-4 (2015–16) and NFHS-5 (2019–21). Hypertension was defined as systolic blo…
Admixture and Genetic Connectivity
Assam serves as a melting pot where various ethnicities converge, shaped by its strategic location bordering the six northeastern states and neighboring countries. This study examines the genomic ancestry of Indo-Aryan speakers in Assam, a region at the eastern edge of the Indian subcontinent known for its diverse linguistic and cultural influences. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) revealed that Assamese Indo-Aryans cluster closely with Bangla…
Intergenerational educational mobility among women in India
Studies on intergenerational educational mobility (IEM) in India rarely focus on women, and those that do often rely on secondary data, lacking insights into current trends. Using data from a longitudinal survey of 304 women across 18 villages in Uttar Pradesh. We provide firsthand insights into intergenerational education mobility (IEM) patterns and their underlying causes using transition matrices and mobility measures. Findings indicate that 7…
Does widowhood affect social capital in old age
Policy implications drawn based on the findings can play a vital role in uplifting the life of old widows in India significantly. This study is perhaps the first study to capture how widowhood affects the social capital in old age in India. Besides, based on the findings, we also suggest some policy initiatives to address the concern of low social capital among old widows in India
Mapping son preference in India, 2002–2021
Background: Despite widespread interest in son preference in India, the study of its spatial distribution and trends by parity at the district level is limited. Objective: This study investigates spatial patterns and temporal trends in son preference by parity across districts of India from 2002 to 2021. Methods: We applied model-based area-level small area estimation techniques on data from consecutive rounds of the Indian National Family Health…
Trends and socioeconomic disparities in undernutrition among Muslim women in India
Purpose A woman's nutritional status significantly determines her overall well-being. The authors critically examine the trends — including socioeconomic disparities — in undernutrition among Muslim women in India, a notably socio-economically disadvantaged group. The authors also investigate trends and variations across the dimensions of caste, place of residence (rural/urban), education, economic status and geographic regions. Design/methodolog…
Undernutrition among children and its determinants across the parliamentary constituencies of India
In India, undernutrition among children has been extremely critical for the last few decades. Most analyses of undernutrition among Indian children have used the administrative boundaries of a state or a district level as a unit of analysis. This paper departs from such a practice and focuses instead on the political boundaries of a parliamentary constituency (PC) as the unit of analysis. The PC is a critical geopolitical unit where political par…
Financing for equity for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health in low- and middle-income countries
Over the past few decades, the world has witnessed considerable progress in women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health (WCAH) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet deep inequities remain between and within countries. This scoping review aims to map financing interventions and measures to improve equity in WCAH in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This scoping review was conducted following Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidan…
Breaking chains across generations
Introduction In this article, authors have investigated the relationship between intergenerational educational mobility and the chances of experiencing domestic violence among Indian women. This perhaps is the first ever attempt to demonstrate this relationship not just in the Indian context but also in the global scholarship on domestic violence. Methods The analysis is based on logistic regression using the data ‘India Youth Survey: Situation a…
Financial toxicity of cancer treatment in India
Background The rising economic burden of cancer on patients is an important determinant of access to treatment initiation and adherence in India. Several publicly financed health insurance (PFHI) schemes have been launched in India, with treatment for cancer as an explicit inclusion in the health benefit packages (HBPs). Although, financial toxicity is widely acknowledged to be a potential consequence of costly cancer treatment, little is known a…
Preventive dental care utilization for children with special healthcare needs including the Covid-19 pandemic, national survey of children’s health, 2020
It is important to determine access to preventive care among vulnerable populations. The purpose of this research is to compare preventive dental utilization between children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) and children without special healthcare needs (CWSHCN) using National Survey of Children’s Health, 2020 (NSCH, 2020) data. A cross-sectional study design was used in this secondary data analysis of data from June 2020 to January 2021, NS…
Spatial heterogeneity in son preference across India's 640 districts
Son preference is culturally rooted across generations in India. While the social and economic implications of son preference are widely acknowledged, there is little evidence on spatial heterogeneity, especially at the district level

Association between unintended births and risk of postpartum depression
Previous studies have shown that unintended births adversely affect birth outcomes, child health and cognitive development in developing countries. However, only a few studies have examined the association between unintended births and risk of postpartum depression (PPD) in these countries. The study uses data from the first wave of Young Lives Study (YLS) conducted in 2002 in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam to examine the association between b…
Disability-based disparity in outpatient health system responsiveness among the older adults in low- to upper-middle-income countries
Health system responsiveness (HSR) has been identified as one of the intrinsic goals of health systems for improvement in health and well-being of population. The HSR deals with the non-medical, legitimate expectations of a population in its interaction with the health system. It becomes essential in case of vulnerable groups like older adults with disability, who are more sensitive and risk-prone to the adversities of healthcare challenges. This…
What Explains the Decline in Neonatal Mortality in India in the Last Three Decades? Evidence from Three Rounds of NFHS Surveys
Identifying the factors that have contributed to recent declines in neonatal mortality in India may help determine which policies and programs are most likely to facilitate further reductions. We use data from the 1992–93, 2005–06, and 2015–16 National Family Health Surveys (NFHS) to examine trends in neonatal mortality in India. We use multivariable decomposition to estimate the contribution of different factors to the change in neonatal mortali…
Inequality of Opportunity in Indian Women
Socio-economic disparity in the occurrence of disability among older adults in six low and middle income countries
Purpose Nearly 200m people in the world experience considerable functioning difficulties. Also, more than three-fourth of the population aged 50 years and over is suffering from some kind of disability in India, China, Ghana, Russia, Mexico and South Africa. Despite the compelling nature of this issue, evidence on socioeconomic disparity in the occurrence of disability is lacking throughout the world and particularly in the aforementioned countri…
The Association Between Unintended Births and Poor Child Development in India
Evidence on the association between unintended births and poor child development in developing countries is limited. We used data from three waves of the Young Lives study on childhood poverty conducted in Andhra Pradesh in 2002, 2006–07, and 2009 to examine the association between unintended births and poor child development in India. Multivariable linear regression models were used to examine the association between unintended births and four i…

Measuring Inequality of Poverty
The commonly used poverty indices measure the overall level of poverty in a society but fail to capture the differential intensity of poverty across different socioeconomic groups. This article proposes a new measure, Inequality of Poverty Index (similar to dissimilarity index in the literature on inequality of opportunity) that captures inequality in distribution of poverty across different subgroups. It can be used to determine the major socioe…
