  • Evaluating the Long-Term Impact of a Taiwanese Study Abroad Program on Participants’ Career Choice and Professional Development

Open Access•Lori Drum, Kenan Sualp et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers The Interdisciplinary…•2022

A convergent, mixed methods study was used to explore the long-term impact on career choice and professional development in healthcare among Taiwan Study Abroad (TWSA) program participants between 2011 and 2015. Data were analyzed by prior study abroad and travel to Asia experience. We conducted an online survey in 2017 (n=38). Overall, 77-87% of the participants reported high impact on both career choice and professional development. Chi-square …

  • Advancing a Competency-Based Mixed Methods Tool to Assess a Course-Based Service-Learning Model Integrating Real-World Experience

    Su‐i Hou•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Program…•2022

Given increasingly complex societal issues such as global aging, evaluators must develop essential competencies responding to the messiness of reality. This practice note advances an argument for the inclusion of service learning as a form of experiential learning that engages learners in hands-on practice with guided reflection, and shares a competency-based mixed methods (MM) tool for generating learning evidence in a course-based service-learn…

  • Identifying resources for promoting healthy aging in community

    Open Access•Adam Reres, Su‐i Hou•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Community-dwelling older adults depend on resources for stability and safety as they age. This study explores resources that mature over time to improve the quality of aging in community (AIC) within communities that are not modeled for aging populations. Recommendations for future research and community programs to improve the ability of community members to age in community were made based on the findings. This qualitative study used semi-struc…

  • Aging in Community Mechanism

    Xian Cao, Su‐i Hou•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Environment•2021•References: 6

Aging-in-Community (AIC) has been the preferred way to aging. However, there is a mismatch between the communities' design and the needs of older adults. With the rapidly growing aging population globally, it is urgent to create a community environment that is constructive for older adults aging in the community. There have been limited scholars investigating the theoretical and conceptual mechanisms behind how the environment encourages or hinde…

  • Mixed methods in public health research in Taiwan – Using visual diagrams to communicate complex design procedures

    Su‐i Hou, Michael D Fetters•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2018

Scholars introduce modern mixed methods research (MMR) and its application in public health research in Taiwan. Specifically, they showcase a multi-phased Taiwan cervical cancer screening mixed methods study using visual diagrams to communicate complex design procedures. While some previous researchers have incorporated quantitative and qualitative data in research, here we hope to provide significant clarity to guide those new to the MMR field. …

  • How Ready Is Higher Education Faculty for Engaged Student Learning? Applying Transtheoretical Model to Measure Service-Learning Beliefs and Adoption

    Open Access•Su-I Hou, Su‐i Hou et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2015

This study examined service-learning (SL) beliefs and participation among faculty in different stages of involvement to develop tailored resources and support. A representative sample of 1,200 faculty members at a major public university in Southeast United States was recruited. The study used the transtheoretical model (TTM) as an innovative way to group SL involvement into five stages: unaware (U), pre-contemplation (PC), contemplation (C), pre…

  • Changing Pedagogy

    Open Access•Su-I Hou, Su‐i Hou et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2015•References: 6

This study conducted inductive analyses on faculty motivations, barriers, and strategies for service-learning (SL) adoption in a major public research university in the Southeast United States. Data found faculty members with prior SL experience were often motivated by intrinsic personal values, yet external barriers need to be addressed to increase morale. An overwhelming lack of recognition and rewards was perceived, despite the institutional p…

  • A Plausible Causal Model of Haart-Efficacy Beliefs, HIV/Aids Complacency, and HIV-Acquisition Risk Behavior Among Young Men Who Have Sex with Men

Open Access•Duncan Mackellar, Duncan A MacKellar et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2010

  • HIV-related behaviors among black students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) versus white students attending a traditionally white institution (TWI)

    Su-I Hou, Su‐i Hou•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2009

Recent data indicated the unexpected movement of the HIV epidemic in the Southeastern US and the transmission among college students especially in black campuses. The current study is the first one attempted to assess and compare HIV-related behaviors among black students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and white students attending a traditionally white institution (TWI). Black students were recruited from HBCUs (n=…

  • Using a web-based survey to assess correlates of intention towards HIV testing among never-been-tested but sexually experienced college students

    Su‐i Hou, S-I Hou et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2005

The purpose of this study is to identify influential psychosocial factors predicting testing intention among college students who have never been tested but are sexually experienced. A web-based survey was conducted during the spring semester in 2003 in a major Southeastern university (N = 440). Results showed only 7.7% of the students expressed intention despite having been sexually experienced. Multiple logistic regression models showed that th…

  • Factors Associated with Intentions for Colorectal Cancer Screenings in a Chinese Sample

    Open Access•Su-I Hou, Su‐i Hou•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2005

This study investigated factors associated with intention to screen for colorectal cancer among Chinese people age 40 yr. and older. In-depth individual interviews were conducted. Participants were recruited from urban middle-class communities in Taichung, Taiwan through homogeneous, criterion, and snowball sampling strategies (N=32). Immersion and crystallization techniques were used in data analysis. Member check was used to ensure data quality…

  • Experience of Colorectal Cancer Screening Using a Home-Administered Kit for Fecal Occult Blood Tests among a Chinese Worksite Population in Taiwan

    Open Access•Su-I Hou, Su‐i Hou•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2005

This study examined the experience of fecal occult blood test (FOBT) using a home-administered kit that requires no stool handling for colorectal cancer screening among Chinese people age 40 and older. 304 participants were recruited from 10 worksites in Taiwan. Both oral and written instructions on how to use the test kit were provided. After participants completed the screening test, their experiences were documented through structured open-end…

  • Correlates of Cervical Cancer Screening Among Women in Taiwan

Su-I Hou, Su‐i Hou et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2003

In this study we examine several theory-based psychosocial factors on cervical cancer screening among Chinese women in Taiwan (N = 125). The reliabilities of the scales showed good internal consistence (Chronbach alpha ranged from 0.68 to 0.88). We found that 30% of the women had never received a Papanicolaou (Pap) test, and only 58% reported a screening in the past 3 years (adherent). Intention to have a Pap test in the coming year was higher am…
