Structure of simple declarative clauses in South African Sign Language
This paper presents the first corpus-driven linguistic description of South African Sign Language (SASL) and the first exploration of the structure of simple declarative clauses in SASL. Using a corpus of 40 narratives of 25 signers from three South African provinces, the study finds that SASL exhibits a basic SVO clause structure, but that the most common clause structure is SV. The study also presents evidence of the existence of the null copul…
Psycholinguistic errors in signed simultaneous interpreting
In this article, errors and repairs in a corpus of English news broadcasts interpreted simultaneously into South African Sign Language are explored from a psycholinguistic perspective according to Levelt’s (1989) cognitive levels (comprehension, conceptualisation, formulation, morphological encoding and articulation). Breaking away from traditional perspectives, the study offers a novel approach to empirical research into sign(ed) language interp…
Shifts in signed media interpreting
This study offers a unique contribution through the construction of an annotated text-based sign language interpreting corpus and its application in analyzing shifts (defined as deviations from source semantic content), which in turn enables researchers to identify and categorize interpreter strategies and norms. The corpus comprises ten half-hour news broadcasts in English and their simultaneously signed interpretations into South African Sign L…
A corpus for signed language interpreting research
Because of the visual nature of signed language, the compilation of a signed language interpreting corpus along the lines of spoken-language interpreting corpora has been viewed as extremely challenging, if not impossible. This study offers a unique contribution in the construction of a lemmatized, annotated text-based corpus of signed language media interpretations, which allows analysis of interesting features using readily-available concordanc…
Comprehension of television news signed language interpreters
This questionnaire-based study evaluates interpretations of TV news broadcasts into South African Sign Language from the perspective of 360 adult Deaf respondents, who identify factors hindering comprehension. Methodologically, findings are based on both open-ended and closed questions. The sources of difficulty identified, together with viewer assessments of current interpreting services and viewer expectancy norms, are explored in relation to t…
CTS and Bible translation
Corpus-based translation studies (CTS) is a very new technique in translation studies. In Bible translation, researchers have been collating corpora of source texts since the eighteenth century. In recent times, corpora of translated Bible texts have also been generated by a number of researchers. Thus the notion of working with corpora rather than with individual texts is not new to Bible translation. However, until very recently these corpora w…
Forgive us our translations
This article examines two of the newer translations of the Bible into Russian, namely the Word of Life (Slovo Zhizni) and Blagaya Vest' translations, with respect to the official Russian Bible, the so-called Synodal Bible. Firstly, divergences between the Greek source texts are analysed in order to determine whether they contribute towards differences in the Russian translations. Secondly, all three translations are analysed according to their confo…
