  • The Communist Party of China

Open Access•Yingjie Guo, Matthew Galway et al.•BOOK•The Communist Party of China•2026

The Communist Party of China has ruled mainland China since 1949. From Marxist revolution and class struggle to market reforms and national rejuvenation, the Party has repeatedly reinvented itself and its justification for monopolizing political power. Bringing together experts from a range of disciplines around the globe, this collection serves as a guide to understanding the Party's unparalleled durability. They examine a range of themes includ…

  • Political Participation as a Pathway to Integration

Open Access•Ye Xue, Minglu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2026

This article examines Chinese international students’ (CISs’) participation in Australian party politics and election campaigns under the prevailing “China panic” climate that problematises Chinese presence in public life. As one of the first empirical studies to explore CISs’ participation in party politics and elections in a host society, it advances a novel understanding of migrant integration by analysing how temporary migrants without voting…

  • Telling the stories of China well? The perception of China's rise by second-generation Chinese immigrants in an Australian University

Open Access•Minglu Chen, Shigeto Sonoda•ARTICLE•International Journal of Asian…•2024

China's rise has been discussed in various ways, but only recently has scholarship started to examine it in relation to overseas Chinese, as politicians and commentators outside China, as well as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) itself and some scholars on “smart power” have come to realize their importance as political messengers of China. This paper analyses interview results with second-generation Chinese immigrants in Australia in tertiary e…

  • Women’s Political Leadership and the Party Agenda

    Minglu Chen•ARTICLE•The China Journal•2024•References: 5

This article focuses on how Chinese female political leaders are represented in media through an examination of the People’s Daily’s coverage of female Politburo members since 1949. Scholars of gender and media in post-Mao China highlight contemporary media’s stereotyping of women and attribute such gender discourse to women being refeminized in the course of reform and the marketization of the economy. This article challenges such dichotomous un…

  • Chinese Entrepreneurs, the Party-State, and Gender

Open Access•Minglu Chen, Benjamin E Goldsmith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Studies•2022•References: 17

In this article, we take a gender perspective to explore the relationship between private entrepreneurs’ business success and their Chinese Communist Party (CCP) membership. We theorize that, due to male-dominated CCP-business networks, female entrepreneurs are not able to leverage CCP membership into greater business success. Observable implications of this are that women will experience little or no business advantage from Party membership, whi…

  • Business Lobbying within the Party-State

    Dongya Huang, Minglu Chen•ARTICLE•The China Journal•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 2

Most existing scholarship regards private businesspeople in China as allies of the party-state, without considering how the private sector’s policy influence is possible in an authoritarian state where the political elites dominate the policy-making process. Based on the large number of successful proposals that the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC) has submitted to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, this …

  • The institutional origin of private entrepreneurs’ policy influence in China

Minglu Chen, Dongya Huang•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese Governance•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 11

In this research, we examine the institutions of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC) and its political role from a historical perspective. By studying the ACFIC’s leadership, governing structure, and the activities of its affiliated business chambers and members, we argue that the ACFIC has evolved beyond its original mechanism as a component of the united front work and played an increasingly important role in the Party-sta…

  • From Economic Elites to Political Elites

    Minglu Chen•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2014•Cited by: 14

The number of entrepreneurs in the system of People's Political Consultative Conferences (PPCC) has increased dramatically in the last two decades. Although the political importance of these local assemblies is usually dismissed, entrepreneur participation suggests a need for further investigation. Based on research on a city-level PPCC, this article seeks to interpret this phenomenon further. In the process of investigating private entrepreneurs…

  • Being Elite, 1931–2011

    Minglu Chen•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2012•Cited by: 2

Current interpretations of the People's Republic of China emphasize the discontinuities of 1949, and even 1978 to some extent. An examination of the experience of a Chinese family from 1931 to 2011 through three generations suggests that processes of elite formation are more complex and their interpretation might be more nuanced. In the process it highlights how one elite family managed to establish and maintain its elite status against a backgro…

  • The China Model

    Minglu Chen, David S G Goodman•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2011•Cited by: 7

The rapid economic development of the People's Republic of China has not only been spectacular since 1978 but also suggests that there is a specific China Model of the relationship between the state, society and the market. In particular, this model would seem to have particular application to the less developed economies of the world. Certainly the emergence of a Beijing Consensus to replace the democratic capitalist Washington Consensus of the …

  • Beyond asymmetry

Beatriz Carrillo Garcia, Minglu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Pacific Review•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Academic commentary has long emphasised the asymmetry in Mexico-China relations. In particular, much attention has focussed since the early 1990s particularly from the Mexican side on the economic imbalance in trade and investment that has become and remains acute with the expansion of the economy of the People's Republic of China. This is though far from the only sense in which the relationship between the two countries is asymmetrical. There is…

  • The Way to Entrepreneurship

    Open Access•Minglu Chen•ARTICLE•PORTAL Journal of Multidisciplinary…•2006

This paper examines the education background and work history of a newly emerged group of entrepreneurs in the People’s Republic of China (PRC)—women. Based on interviews with 62 women entrepreneurs in the north China county of Jiaocheng, Shanxi Province, conducted between October 2003 and May 2004, it compares and analyzes the situation of women enterprise owners, wives of male enterprise owners and those who take leadership positions in the ent…
