Relative-effect metrics do not reflect societal burden under population ageing
The Epistemological Dilemma of Algorithmic Justice
The rapid and transformative evolution of artificial intelligence—from predictive recidivism algorithms to Large Language Models (LLMs) capable of passing the Uniform Bar Exam—has reinvigorated the ambition to render law ‘computable’. This article argues that this project, even in its most advanced generative forms, rests on a fundamental epistemological category error. We contend that the operational logics of AI—whether the rigid formalism of s…

How does the new energy demonstration city pilot policy affect energy-intensive enterprises’ ESG? A quasi-natural experiment from China
The new energy demonstration city (NEDC) pilot policy is an important attempt of the government to promote the energy system transition and further advance China's sustainable society development. The main focus of the NEDC is energy-intensive enterprises, however, the policy effect on these enterprises’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) is still underdiscussed. This study uses a panel data of Chinese listed energy-intensive enterprises…
Temporal governance and accountability costs of Beijing's digital citizen request system
Prior literature highlights democracies' struggle to cope with today's rapid socio‐economic changes, contrasting with more adept responses in authoritarian systems. This study makes a first attempt to explain the perceived speediness in an authoritarian setting. By focusing on Beijing's digital service request system, Jiesu Jiban, we argue that in creating request categories, standardizing cadres' reactions to requests, and designing decision pat…

Response of endothelial function and oxidative stress after supervised aerobic exercise training in formerly preeclamptic women
We sought to investigate effects of aerobic exercise in women with preeclampsia history. 42 women were enrolled. After 16 weeks, we found improvement in endothelial function index and oxidative stress biomarkers in the exercise group. Moreover, the change of endothelial function index was significantly associated with the change of total antioxidant capacity in the exercise group. Our findings showed aerobic exercise improved exercise capacity, e…
Internationalisation of higher education
This article reports the findings of a study on the intercultural dimension of internationalisation at two universities, located in China and Canada, as evidenced through their visiting scholar (VS) programme. Andreotti and her research team identified three articulations of internationalisation in higher education that are located in a modern/colonial imaginary. They propose a fourth articulation, relational trans‐localism, that is located outsi…
The Paradox of Small Hydropower
Small Hydropower is regarded by the Chinese state as a method for both poverty alleviation and environmental protection in rural areas. This paper finds that local government officials develop an ‘environmentally bundled economic interests’ approach that simultaneously fulfills the central state’s new political mission and local economic development demand. The small hydropower plants however have paradoxically become the destroyer of the environ…
Early Processed Triticeae Food Remains in The Y anghai T ombs, X injiang, C hina
Visible food remains can provide evidence regarding ancient food processing, the spread of cereals and cultural communication. Some desiccated food remains were discovered in the Y anghai T ombs, T urpan district, in X injiang, C hina (2600–2900 bp ). These food remains were analysed by F ourier transform infrared ( FT–IR ) spectroscopy combined with plant microfossils, including starch grains and cross cells of pericarp from the cereal bran frag…
