Rewriting Memory
This article explores how the Russian leadership has reshaped historical memory – particularly narratives of the Holocaust – to serve contemporary foreign policy goals, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine. It examines the emergence and strategic use of the concept of the genocide of the Soviet people . The authors trace the roots of this discourse to Soviet-era “soft Holocaust denial”, demonstrating its use as an instrument of interna…
Putin’s Rise to Power
The article is devoted to the current state of the discussion around transition of power in Russia in 1999-2001. The authors rely both on the patronal approach to show post-Soviet specificity and on the theory of neo-elitism to show its universal features. This transition was the point at which the highly differentiated post-Soviet elite was able to create a fragile base for integration. The article shows that it is possible to apply the theory o…
Russia’s Policies in the Post-Soviet Space
The article challenges the view that Russia’s goal in the post-Soviet space is to make the region an exclusive zone of Russian influence and keep other world powers out entirely. In fact, Russia has two policies towards the influence of other powers that are active in the region: a ‘business as usual’ approach, applied to China and Turkey; and a securitized ‘New Cold War policy’, applied to the US and West (especially towards their presence in Uk…
Between Russia and China
Central Asian states are usually considered as passive elements rather than active agents of integration in Greater Eurasia. This article considers the role of these states as active agents shaping integration processes according to their own interests and perspectives. All Central Asian states conduct so-called “multivector” foreign policies balancing relations with the key great powers (Russia, China, and “collective West”) as well as with Midd…
Patriotic Interpretation in the Retrospective Assessment of the War in Afghanistan
This article refers to memoirs of high-ranking participants and witnesses of the war in Afghanistan (1979–1989) published in the 1990s: it singles out two departmental interpretations of the war by military and intelligence veterans and examines their influence on the study of the history of the war. The article takes an unprecedented look at important transformation in interpretations at the turn of the century. The authors provide a holistic pi…
Russia’s policy in the “frozen conflicts” of the post-Soviet space
The article analyzes the evolution of Russia’s policy in secessionist conflicts in the post-Soviet space in 1991–2018. The authors differentiate the patterns of Russian policy between the “first” and “second” generation of frozen conflicts. The “first generation” includes four conflicts of an ethno-linguistic nature that arose out of the collapse of the USSR in the early 1990s (Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Pridnestrov’e and Karabakh). Most commentato…
The limits of Russia’s ‘soft power’
Moscow came late to the soft power game, but made it an integral feature of the drive to restore Russia’s great power status. Russia has a proud cultural legacy and has invested heavily in trying to promote a positive image of the country abroad, for example through the Russia Today television channel. However, the leadership faced the challenge of dealing with the complex legacy of the Soviet past, and finding a viable development model for Russ…
Policy networks in European–Russian gas relations
This paper analyzes why formation of policy networks, which is an effective tool of European policy in different spheres, have lost significant part of its positive functions from the point of view of guaranteeing European energy security in case of European–Russian gas policy networks. This can be explained by the absence of effective international regime in gas trade as well as by failed transition to democracy, market economy and rule of law i…
New ‘dividing lines’ in Europe
The paper presents the materials of the special issue “Institutions, Networks and Trust in European–Russian relations” offering various interdisciplinary perspectives on EU–Russia relations. The positions of the authors of the special edition are analysed in the context of both Western and Russian literature on EU–Russia relations. This analysis is conducted within the framework of close to Constructivism “security community” approach that stress…

Moscow and St. Petersburg as Centers of Attraction of Social Nets
The “Choir” of the Moscow “Gateway” and Scenarios of Its Development
Intelligentsia and Structural Innovations in Political Expanse (An Essay of Comparative Analysis)
Net Dynamics of Globalization and Typology of “Global Gateways”
Three Scenarios of a “Coloured” Revolution in Russia (Modelling the Net Dynamics of the Russian Polity)
Schools and Sects in Political Thought of Modern Russia (Marginal Notes to The Thinking Russia Book of Collected Works)
Central Asia
