Factors Contributing to the Relatively Low Gender Gap in Entrepreneurship in Russia
Entrepreneurship is notably characterized by gender disparities, adversely impacting aggregate income and productivity. Accordingly, this study investigates the determinants of gender gaps in entrepreneurship in Russia, where the entrepreneurship gender gap, which is defined as the difference in entrepreneurial participation rates between men and women, is approximately 2%. Since the 2000s, this gap has remained relatively stable and is notably s…
Internationalization and Trust From the Perspective of Mexican Entrepreneurs: Policy Implications for Small‐ and Medium‐Sized Enterprises in Developing Countries
This article examines the associations between trust—institutional and personal—and entrepreneurial internationalization by surveying to collect data from entrepreneurs (owners or chief executive officers). The survey process facilitated a comprehensive diagnosis, identifying trust l…
Religiosity and Entrepreneurship in Post-Soviet Russia
This article empirically studies the associations between religion (Orthodox Christianity, Islam, and non-religion), religiosity (to be a believer or not, and to what extent), religious participation (attending divine services, meetings or other religious events) and the probabilities of being an entrepreneur in post-Soviet Russia. Using logistic regressions and data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, the findings suggest lower like…
Bilingual schooling and wage income: The case of Tatarstan in Russia
Tatarstan has been developing several public policies in favour of the Tatar language; probably the most relevant is bilingual schooling. Given this, the present research compares the monthly wage income between those who studied before, during, and after the implementation of this educational reform. Using data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, this work estimates Mincer functions, adding dummy variables for bilingual schooling, an…
Never married and earnings: Evidence from Russia
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of civil status on wage earnings in post-Soviet Russia. Education and work experience are the key explanatory variables according to the Mincer function. In view of that, here, an extension of the Mincer equation is estimated, focusing on never married individuals versus other civil status (married people). Thus, testing the female wage penalty and the male wage premium hypotheses. Design…
Religiosity and Wage Earnings in Post-Soviet Russia
This article empirically studies the relationship between religiosity, to be a believer or not and to what extent, and wage earnings in post-Soviet Russia. Mincer equations are estimated adding religious affiliation and religiosity as explanatory variables and using dynamic specifications, controlling for endogeneity and time-invariant independent variables. The empirical strategy includes working age individuals (eighteen to sixty) and uses long…
The impact of socioeconomic status and population size on the use of the Tatar language at home
Based on econometric methods, we found that Tatar children from families with better material conditions and those who live in bigger cities are more likely to use the Russian language at home. Although Tatar seems to be well protected, thanks to local language policies after perestroika, we found some warning signs for the reformulation of public policies for the maintenance and development of minority languages in Russia
Cultural activities and educational progress: Evidence from Russian longitudinal data / Actividades culturales y progreso educativo: evidencia basada en datos longitudinales procedentes de Rusia
This study analyses the possible influence of cultural activities such as visits to theatres, museums, exhibitions, zoos, circuses, excursions, trips and campaigns on educational progress. It uses longitudinal data taken from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, which is a unique nationally representative survey; the sample consists of schoolchildren aged six to14. The methodology makes use of the panel data structure and logit regressions …
Bilingualism and educational achievements: The impact of the language used at home by Tatar school students in Tatarstan, Russia
This article empirically studies the impact of bilingualism on educational achievements. This relationship has been thoroughly studied in a number of countries around the world, but not in Russia. We used a sample of 709 ethnic Tatar school students aged 15–16 (in the ninth grade) in the spring of the year 2010. We found a positive significant effect on school grades based on logistic regressions, and controlling for family background characteris…
The Third Pillar of the Basel Accord: Evidence of borrower discipline in the Kyrgyz banking system
We empirically study the asset side of market discipline in the banking system of the Kyrgyz Republic, examining whether borrowers are willing to pay higher interest rates to high-quality banks. Based on dynamic panel models and a dataset with bank information from 23 banks over the period 2010–2012, our findings suggest the presence of market discipline induced by borrowers. In other words, banks with higher capital ratios and liquidity charge h…
Factors affecting the knowledge of Chuvash language amongst school students in Russia
This paper empirically studies the impact of socioeconomic status and type of settlement on Chuvash language knowledge in the Chuvash Republic, Russia. In addition to presenting our survey results of 2,848 schoolchildren from September, 2012 to October, 2013, this research uses logit regressions to test the effect of social class, family income, parental education, rural origin, ethnicity, parental language proficiency, population size and distan…
Determinants of educational outcomes: Analysis of the Republic of Tatarstan
This paper studies the determinants of educational outcomes in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. Using principle component analysis, least squares with robust standard errors, and probit models, I found that family resources, including socioeconomic status, cultural and social capital, show a statistically significant effect on educational achievements and plans about educational trajectories. However, little of the variation in the dependent va…
