Exploring conceptualization of children and youth participation in decision-making among U.S.-based child welfare workers
Children and youth have limited opportunities to participate in decisions that affect their lives, especially in child protection contexts. This qualitative study explores how 23 child welfare workers in three U.S. states conceptualize children and youth participation in decision-making (CYPDM). They describe CYPDM as a process of giving young clients a voice through inclusion, engagement, and active listening. The findings lay groundwork for str…
The Perspectives of Black Youth on Risk and Protective Factors for Peer Involvement in the Juvenile Legal System

This study aims to understand the risk and protective mechanisms of youth involvement with the JLS based on the perspectives of African American/Black youth. More specifically, factors that hinder youth success and prevent them from becoming entangled in the JLS are explored as well as their recommendations for adults in power and their peers. Photovoice methodology was…
Challenges and Coping Strategies of Families With Young Children Amid Hurricanes
Climate-induced disasters have immediate and lasting effects disrupting the safety and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. This study explored barriers experienced by parents and caregivers du…

Patterns of Intimate Partner Violence Victimization and Survivors’ Help-Seeking
Intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors often do not seek critically needed help. A good understanding of the relationship between the pattern of violence and help-seeking is critical to developing adequate services for the survivors, as well as for reaching out to those who do not seek help. This study used the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey to examine how IPV survivor’s help-seeking varies, depending on the characteristi…
