Anomie and authority: How global events are reshaping public interactions with law enforcement
This study explores differences in the characteristics of assaults against police in Australia between relatively stable (2010–2020) and disruptive (2020–2024) periods to consider whether anomie may help explain any observed changes in offender behaviour. Descriptive analysis of 172 cases reveals a notable increase in young offenders and assaults triggered by personal crises during the disruptive period. Intentional assaults also rose sharply, su…
Understanding Youth Assaults of Police Officers in Australia: A Power Threat Meaning Framework Analysis
This study explores youth violence towards police officers in Australia through the Power Threat Meaning Framework to better understand the underlying factors contributing to such violence; focusing on power dynamics, childhood adversity, and trauma. It examines power dynamics in past and present circumstances and the function of violent behaviours in these encounters. To do this, a content analysis was conducted using court findings and coroner …
The knowledge and skills needed for forensic social work in Australia: A Delphi study
Forensic social work is the application of social work knowledge, skills, values and ethics within a legal and criminal justice context. Globally, social workers play an integral role in the criminal justice system but in many countries, including Australia, there is limited conception of the competencies needed for this specialist practice. Australia serves as an example of forensic social work regulated through a generalist social work competen…
Assessing student confidence, competence and calibration: A simulation approach to discussing readiness for forensic practice
Case management in the criminal justice system includes conducting psychosocial assessments, identifying risks, developing intervention strategies, navigating services, monitoring/evaluation, and advocacy. Social work and criminology graduates are equally qualified for forensic case management positions, yet the work readiness of these graduates is poorly understood. This study used a simulated client interview in a community corrections context …
From myth to reality: Exploring assaults on police during domestic violence call outs
This study aims to determine whether responding to domestic violence (DV) callouts poses an increased risk of assaults on police officers compared to other types of incidents. A quantitative analysis was conducted using official court findings and coroners’ reports from all Australian states and territories, spanning 13 years (January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2023). Using chi-square analyses, the study examined 170 convicted cases of assaults on …

Global forensic social work education: A cross-national comparison of education models in 10 countries
Unlike qualifying education, forensic social work education is heterogeneous. This review provides a cross-national comparison of 10 countries: the United States, Brazil, England, the Netherlands, Hungary, Kenya, South Africa, Thailand, India and Australia. It aims to understand education models across diverse contexts and encourage further reflection on forensic social work pedagogy. Findings revealed that there is little mandating of educationa…
Stay in Your Own Lane” the Inherent Flaws Undermining Children’s Rights Within Australia’s Family Law System: A Perspective from the Field
The social scientists and legal professionals who work in family law in Australia should be recognised for working tirelessly in a complex, overworked, and archaic system. A system that underserves their capacity to maintain integrity, expertise, and ethical diligence in the professions they are assigned. In this perspective piece, we acknowledge the innovative work being done within this system to strive to meet the best interests of the childre…
Intimate Partner Stalking/Pursuit: A Pathophysiology of Attachment Style
Approximately half of stalking victims were previously in an intimate relationship with the perpetrator, and attachment style is strongly correlated with intimate partner stalking (IPS). In the first study to investigate polyvagal theory in IPS, we examined 58 adult participants’ attachment style, sex, history of IPS, vagal tone activity (i.e., heart rate variability; HRV), and cognitive processing disruptions (i.e., Stroop performance) in either…
Explicit and Contextual Vocabulary Intervention: Effects on Word and Definition Learning
Two single-case studies examined the effects of a vocabulary intervention on K-second grade Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) children’s vocabulary learning. The intervention consisted of (a) explicit instruction that included fast mapping, and drill and practice games and (b) in-context activities that included book reading, conceptual activities, and conversation. Study 1 compared the effectiveness of in-context alone and explicit+in-context instru…
