Investigating the Capability Approach
Capability Approach (CA) extends our understanding of wellbeing by underlining the importance of freedoms. There is a need to operationalize CA components for empirical measurement in different settings and population groups. This study investigated the conversion process from perceived resources to perceived capabilities by investigating the role of perceived conversion factors (personal and contextual) among a particular population group of Fin…
The Role of Institutional Trust in European Healthcare Evaluations—A Comparison of Absolute and Relative Healthcare Attitudes During the Covid‐19 Pandemic
As with other social protection systems, healthcare represents a public institution that promises security in critical times. Thus, during the COVID‐19 crisis, trust became a crucial resource when people believed their health was at risk. The possible link between welfare state institutions and trust has been a popular research topic in recent decades, but the connection between healthcare evaluations and trust is underexplored. This study examin…
The role of political orientation in shaping deservingness perceptions and immigration attitudes in Europe
In this study, we focus on European immigration attitudes in the perspective of deservingness perceptions and political orientation. Our data are conducted from the European Social Survey (2016) database, which contains 21 European countries and 39,400 participants. We used the multilevel method to study the relationship between immigration attitudes and deservingness perceptions. The results demonstrate that the more negative deservingness perce…

These questions are addressed using a mixed-method approach combining survey and interview data and analysis. The data is…
Social and Institutional Trust in Times of Crisis
Focusing on 2002–2011, we analyse levels of trust in Greece and compare them with 17 other European countries. During this period, Greece endured a serious economic crisis. Signs of increasing mistrust in all societal institutions became evident and the nation witnessed extreme phenomena, such as violent demonstrations, the surfacing of radical political ideas, parties with nationalistic and racist characteristics, and noncompliance with rules, r…
Dealing with disturbances
This article investigates neighbourhood social dynamics with the help of two attitude dimensions discovered in earlier qualitative research: the threshold of intervention and adaptation. The data come from a nationally representative Finnish Neighbourhood Survey ( N = 760) conducted in 2012. Our results show that adaptation and intervention characterise neighbourhood interaction in our survey data set as well. The threshold of intervention is hig…
The Importance of Place on Social Capital
Street‐level Bureaucrats' and the General Public's Deservingness Perceptions of Social Assistance Recipients in F inland
Perceptions of deservingness are crucial when we attempt to explain public support for welfare policies or try to understand the development of modern welfare states. These perceptions also reveal the status of a particular population group in society and the social cohesion between marginalized groups and the general public. In this article, we are concerned about whether perceptions of the deservingness of social assistance recipients vary betw…
Foundations of subjective well-being in turbulent times
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the individual and aggregate level foundations of subjective well-being (SWB). In particular, the authors focus on the institutional differences between the welfare states as possible explanatory sources of SWB. Design/methodology/approach – The data come from the Finnish, British, German and Greek sections of the European Social Survey Round 5, 2010 ( n =10,046). The meth…

The aim of the article is to analyse the impact of the self-evaluated ethnic composition of the place of residence on interethnic contacts and attitudes through the comparison of four Nordic countries. Data come from the European Social Survey 2002. Compared with ethnically homogeneous neighbourhoods, interethnic relationships are more common in ethnically mixed neighbourhoods with some self-reported ethnic minorities. However, living in an area …
Welfare Benefits and Generalized Trust in Finland and Europe
Linked or Divided by the Web
It is often assumed that the increased use of the new information and communication technology (ICT) can displace traditional face-to-face sociability. At the same time, it has been argued that the new ICT can also strengthen traditional forms of sociability. This article evaluates these opposite views by examining how the frequency of Internet use is connected with two forms of sociability: civic engagement and interpersonal involvement. Empiric…
