  • Singapore’s Hedging Strategy Toward China: A Study Focused on Cases of Regime Utilization

    C S Lee, Chaemin Lee•ARTICLE•Asia Review•2025

  • Embracing anti-racism: Co-creating recommendations with Black people for how addiction treatment needs to change

    Open Access•Natrina L Johnson, Corinne A Beaugard et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2025•References: 30

In the United States, Black people face harsher health and social consequences of addiction compared to people who are not Black. These differential consequences are largely attributable to systemic racism. While addiction treatment may mitigate health disparities related to substance use, Black people also experience structural barriers and direct interpersonal racism which contribute to inequitable access and treatment outcomes. Improvements in…

  • Technical and relational process in MI sessions with a sample of Hispanic/Latinx adults who engage in heavy drinking: A latent growth mediation model

Molly Magill, Figuereo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2024

The current study tests the Motivational Interviewing (MI) technical and relational hypotheses in a sample of Hispanic/Latinx adults ( N = 276) who engage in heavy alcohol consumption. MI causal theory hypothesizes that therapist use of MI consistent skills (i.e., technical hypothesis) and embodiment of the MI Spirit (i.e., relational hypothesis) will elicit client change talk, which is a putative mechanism of positive client outcome after the se…

  • The associations of Latino/a racial status and neighborhood discrimination to alcohol use and psychological distress

Tessa Nalven, Nichea S Spillane et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2021

Minority Stress Theory posits that discrimination is associated with negative mental health outcomes; however, the location of the perceived discrimination may matter. This study examines whether race, inside-neighborhood discrimination, and their interaction are associated with hazardous drinking, alcohol-related consequences, and depressive/anxiety symptoms in a racially diverse sample of Latino/a adults. Participants (N = 296, 63% male, Mage=4…

  • Alcohol Use Severity among Hispanic Emerging Adults: Examining Intragroup Marginalization, Bicultural Self-Efficacy, and the Role of Gender within a Stress and Coping Framework

Miguel Angel Cano, Mario De La Rosa et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2021

Most research on cultural stressors and alcohol has focused on intercultural stressors. Continuing to exclude intracultural stressors (e.g., intragroup marginalization) from alcohol research will yield a biased understanding of the experiences of Hispanics living in a bicultural society. As we amass more studies on intracultural stressors, research will be needed to identify mutable sociocultural factors that may mitigate the association between …
