The (In)Effectiveness of Political Advertising in Canada
In an effort to conceptually replicate prior work on persuasion and campaign effects, we conducted three randomized survey experiments to evaluate the persuasive effects of political advertisements during the 2025 Canadian federal election. We tested a total of 15 campaign advertisements on 3,346 respondents. Our results are consistent with what seems to be three robust findings about the effects of campaign advertising: (1) they can change candi…
Understanding politicians’ discourse on inflation and cost of living in Canada
Recent polls indicate that inflation is a frustrating issue for Canadians. How do politicians react to citizens’ dissatisfaction when inflation rates are high? This study analyzed transcripts of parliamentary interventions from the House of Commons of Canada from 2006 to 2022, as well as data on electoral pledges from the Canadian Polimeter. This study examined how Canadian politicians of various partisan affiliations respond to citizens’ concern…
Electoral Accountability in a Multilevel Governance Context
We know a great deal about how individual and institutional factors combine to explain economic voting in well-established democracies, but much less is known about these dynamics in younger democracies and even less so in subnational contexts. Using survey and fiscal data from four federal Latin American countries and adopting a multilevel estimation strategy, we examine voters’ ability to blame and reward governors for the state of the economy …
Down with the Senate? Understanding Support for the Abolition of the Senate in Canada
Various governments have debated the question of whether the Canadian Senate should be abolished or reformed since 1980, yet a solution has still not been found. While some advocate for a substantial reform of the institution, others propose to get rid of it completely. Drawing from the 2021 Canadian Election Study, this article explores the underlying value systems that shape opinions on the abolition of the Canadian Senate. The findings suggest…
