  • Varieties of Authoritarian Policymaking

    Open Access•Emilia Simison•ARTICLE•Governance•2026

Public policies are expected to vary across regime types, but this association remains inconclusive even when further differentiating within types of authoritarian regimes. Focusing on the theoretical mechanisms behind the expected associations between regime type and policy, I propose a novel framework to analyze policymaking and outputs across regimes. I claim that policymaking and how close its results are from the dictator's goal in any autho…

  • Argentina 2022

    Open Access•Candelaria Garay, Emilia Simison•ARTICLE•Revista de ciencia política•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 4

  • Lawmaking in personalist dictatorships

Alejandro Bonvecchi, Emilia Simison•ARTICLE•Journal of Legislative Studies•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 20

How does lawmaking work in personalist dictatorships? Assuming that legislative institutions established within power-sharing arrangements become costly for dictators to ignore and are consequently likely to affect lawmaking processes and outcomes, we argue that while legislatures in personalist dictatorships may approve most government initiatives, they can affect lawmaking via amendments, which signal factional disagreement and may prompt dicta…

  • Supporters and opposition in authoritarian legislatures

    Emilia Simison•ARTICLE•Journal of Legislative Studies•2022•Cited by: 8•References: 32

Do supporters and opposition behave differently in authoritarian legislatures? This paper examines this question by analysing legislative activity in an authoritarian regime with a multiparty legislature. Using a novel dataset on legislative activity in the Brazilian Congress during the last dictatorship (1964–1985), it finds significant differences in the topics and likelihood of enactment of the bills introduced by pro-government and anti-gover…

  • Nation or District? Evaluating the Territorial Scope of Bills through Experimental Designs

    Open Access•Emilia Simison•ARTICLE•Journal of Politics in Latin…•2017•References: 14

This paper studies the territorial scope of the bills presented by members of the Chamber of Deputies (the lower chamber of the Argentine National Congress) during Juan Domingo Perón's first two terms in office (1946–1955). Its main objective is to observe the effect that modifying the electoral system (switching from incomplete party ballots in multimember districts to relative majorities in single-member districts) had on that scope. Experiment…
