The European Influence on Qing Dynasty Architecture
The design and planning of Western-style constructions during the early Qing Dynasty in China constituted a significant multicultural encounter that fused technological advancement with aesthetic innovation. This cultural interplay is particularly evident in the imperial garden and pavilion projects commissioned by the Qing court, which served as physical and symbolic sites of cross-cultural dialogue. Influenced by the intellectual and artistic m…
Sustainable Conservation of Architectural Heritage to Reduce Environmental Impact
The architectural heritage of a particular place, in most cases, is characterised by vernacular and unique constructions that have been adapted to local climate conditions. For this purpose, specific materials and construction methods have traditionally been used that, in addition to the durability of the construction, also allow for the consideration of the energy efficiency of the building itself. The present intersection of climate change and …
Architectural Heritage Analysis of the Yuanying Guan Pavilion
This paper aims to analyse the structural function and symbolic function of the historic building Yuan Guan during the inculturation process in the early Qing dynasty in China. This process was the dominant Western practice during the early Qing dynasty, when technology, design, aesthetics, and linear perspective were considered indispensable tools to express the nature of an architectural encounter between China and Europe. Given the artistic–cu…
The impact of overtourism on architecture and urban space in historic cities
Since the massive scale of urban tourism (at the end of the 20th century), which caused an exponential increase of visitors to cities, the density of tourist activity in historic boroughs has come to cause strong tourist pressure on the grid and buildings of these spaces. Motivated by local policies, which promote tourist attraction and expansion, this monoculture results in a simplification of the way in which urban centres operate. Beyond the a…
The Cultural Heritage of Architectural Linear Perspective
This paper presents a contextual use of the innovative drawing techniques that involved architecture and painting in the Qing court during the first half of the eighteenth century. At this point architectural linear perspective in painting (quadratura) and stage design had become common fields of experimentation for the Chinese and Jesuit artists missionaries. In this conceptual context, Western quadratura was developed in China by Giovanni Ghera…
Aesthetic Interpretation and Construction of an Illusionist Painting in the Qing Dynasty
As a discipline, semiotics has gained recognition in many fields. Cultural background plays an important part in the field of the visual art. Given the rich cultural context of the pictorial hybridization Chinese-European in the early Qing dynasty, the pictorial works can be used in studying semiotics. This article addresses a discourse on some semiotic reflections in painting. It focuses on the application of the theory of the semiotic scientist…
