  • The Banished Jupiter

Han Sung Kim•ARTICLE•Seoul journal of Korean studies•2025

This article examines how and why Kim Kirim (1908–?), a representative Korean modernist of the 1930s, commemorated his colleague Yi Sang (1910–1937). Kim expressed his thoughts on the deceased poet in his poem “The Banished Jupiter,” in which Yi is likened to Jupiter. The poem is widely remembered as Kim’s representative work, having been immediately translated into Japanese and published by their colleague, Kim Soun (1907–1981). This article ana…

  • The "Androgynous Mind" in the Postwar Poetry of Pak In-hwan

Han Sung Kim, Jung Ah Choi•ARTICLE•Korean studies•2025

This study examines gendered poetic language in Korean postwar modernism in the context of Virginia Woolf's "androgynous mind," as understood in Rita Felski's The Gender of Modernity (1995). Specifically, the values represented in the poetic landscapes of Pak In-hwan (1926–1956), one of the poets representing Korean postwar modernist poetry in the 1950s, will be reconsidered in light of literary gender. Pak In-hwan's poetic approach is sympatheti…

  • The Roots of Culture

Jung Ah Choi, Han Sung Kim•ARTICLE•Journal of World Literature•2022

Kim Suyŏng (1921–1968) is a Korean modernist poet whose works have been widely studied from the perspective of comparative and world literature. Yet, there is hardly any research on how his work is related to Russian literature. Given that he had little to no command of the Russian language, he used English translations to translate into Korean or comment on the Russian works selected for publication. His translations of Russian literature exhibi…

  • Against “Fascism” in Korean Liberation Space (1945-1950)

Han Sung Kim•ARTICLE•Asian Journal of Peacebuilding•2020

This article explores how a leading Korean literary critic, Kim Kirim (1908-?), understood the controversial term fascism in his writings. If we associate fascism with wartime Japanese totalitarianism, it is difficult to understand why and how he warned against fascism in liberated Korea. By interpreting his use of the term fascism from the colonial to the liberation period, we are able to gain a better understanding of the international relation…

  • Financialization and Innovation Short-termism in OECD Countries

Open Access•Young Soo Lee, Han Sung Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2020

This study looks at how financialization has changed technology innovation strategy. It is our contention that, as conditions of managerial myopia worsen in line with deepening financialization, economic entities direct technological innovation strategy toward incremental innovation at the expense of radical innovation that involves high-risk and long-term investment. We test this hypothesis on data for thirty-one OECD countries between 1990 and …
