Archaeological and Anthropological Study on the Grave of Eunuch-Official Couple Serving for a Royal Court of Joseon Kingdom
Archaeological and Anthropological Study on the Grave of Eunuch-Official Couple Serving for a Royal Court of Joseon Kingdom
This article presents the findings of the study of a co-burial of a eunuch-official and his wife, found in the city of Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi-do Province, made in accordance with Confucian traditions during the Joseon Dynasty period. A description of finds, perfectly preserved in the grave sealed with lime-soil mixture and charcoal barrier, is given. The writings on the banners draping the coffins are studied. These say that in the left coffin the h…
Alterations in Spontaneous Movement, Corticosterone, and Cytokines in Mice Exposed to 835 MHz Radiofrequency Radiation
Post-factum autopsy to confirm cardiac structures visible on computed tomography images of Korean mummies
autopsy also has value as a complementary and confirmatory analysis for enhanced accuracy of diagnoses in paleo-radiological studies.
Paleoparasitological study on the soil sediment samples from archaeological sites of ancient Silla Kingdom in Korean peninsula
Paleopathological Patterns of Degenerative Arthropathy
This study was performed to assess degenerative osteoarthritis (OA) in human skeletons from 15th to 19th century Joseon tombs of South Korea. The researchers performed anthropological examinations of OA in selected limb joints of Joseon skeletons and considered possible reasons for the revealed aspects of OA by focusing on lifestyle or occupational activity during that time. A total of 140 skeletons unearthed from Joseon tombs were evaluated and …
Forensic Anthropological Study on Saw Marks Appearing on the Tibiae of a Joseon Skeleton
Evidence of Periostitis in Joseon Dynasty Skeletons
Periostitis is one of the human diseases commonly encountered in archaeological samples. It is known to be an important health indicator for paleopathologists examining skeletal remains. In our recent study on a Joseon skeletal series (n=101), non-specific, primary periostitis was observed only in five individuals (#4, #29, #137, #175, and #290). Notably, there were no secondary periostitis-suggestive signs (e.g. syphilis), except for those cause…
Amplification of DNA Remnants in Mummified Human Brains from Medieval Joseon Tombs of Korea
Recently, a number of mummified brains obtained from the remains of medieval Joseon Koreans have been subjected to biological investigations. Although the morphology of the organs had been perfectly maintained on gross examination, we still do not know how well biomolecules such as DNA were preserved. In the present study, the preservation status of remnant DNA in mummified brain tissue was determined by means of comparisons with corresponding DN…
Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis cases found in Joseon Dynasty Human Sample Collection of Korea
Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a disorder showing hyperostosis of the spinal column and ossification of extraspinal ligaments or tendons. The prevalence of DISH has been found to be higher in historic peoples of the upper- and ruling classes, and in fact was closely correlative with nutritional and high-caloric diets. DISH is also known to be a function of genetic factors; as such, there have been very few cases of DISH found …
Bioarchaeological Investigation of Possible Gunshot Wounds in 18th Century Human Skeletons from Korea
Notwithstanding the relative abundance of bioarchaeological evidence of pre‐20th century gunshot wounds discovered at European and American archaeological sites, similar findings in East Asian countries have been very rare. In this study, we report evidence of possible gunshot wounds sustained by two individuals buried in Joseon tombs of Korea. The shapes of the trauma seemed to indicate low‐velocity projectiles, most likely musket balls. To our …

Anthropological Study on Human Skeletons from Joseon Tomb, for Confirming Ryu Ja-Gwang, a Famous Historical Figure of Medieval Korea
Possible rheumatoid arthritis found in the human skeleton collected from the tomb of Joseon Dynasty, Korea, dating back to the 1700s AD
We report a possible rheumatoid arthritis (RA) case found in a Korean Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) tomb encapsulated by a lime-soil mixture barrier (LSMB). The tomb is thought to have been constructed during the 1700s AD (1760 AD by carbon dating). In our anthropological examination, joint destruction, erosion or fusion (signs of polyarthritis) were identified mainly in the peripheral skeleton. Especially in both sides of the wrist bones, severe de…

Effect of Dexamethasone in the Development of O1 or O4 Immunoreactive Oligodendrocyte of the Neonatal Rat
White matter disease (WMD) study, which underlies the subsequent progress of cerebral palsy as well as cognitive impairment of premature and/or low birth weight infants, has been focused either on the hypoxia-ischemia damage or cytokine-induced brain damage related with maternal or fetal inflammation. Also, dexamethasone (DEXA) may increase the risk of neuropsychological problem including adverse cognitive and behavioral outcome in preterm infant…
Human mummified brain from a medieval tomb with lime-soil mixture barrier of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea
Although all of the Korean medieval mummies found up to the present time have shown relatively well-preserved brains, relevant biomedical information has been difficult to acquire owing to the obstacles to obtaining permission to conduct invasive investigations. However, recently we were able to secure permission to investigate, through various forms of examination including dissection, a well-preserved brain found in a lime-soil mixture barrier …
