  • Fordism’s Underside

    Emilio Betti•ARTICLE•Labor Studies in Working-Class…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This article deconstructs some of the allegedly positive features of the Fordist era by analyzing postwar Italy from a gender perspective. In the Italian case, the Fordist factory became a paradigmatic image of Italian modernity in the years of the economic miracle, disregarding the diversity of the industrial system and the diversity of labor relations and working conditions, supposedly characterized by the prevalence of stable, full-time, perma…

  • Italian women workers and women activists between home and factory

    Open Access•Emilio Betti•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2024•References: 1

From a gender historical perspective, labour precarity constitutes a long-term phenomenon. Women's work represents a privileged observatory to understand how instability and precarity also characterised the cycle of economic and industrial expansion of the 1950s and 1960s. The article compares the conditions of female factory workers with those of home-based workers, a traditionally invisible category of workers, who between the 1960s and 1970s p…

  • Working-Class Women's Writing of Activism and Imprisonment

    Open Access•Emilio Betti, Eloisa Betti•ARTICLE•Labour History•2023

This article analyses women’s experiences of agency and imprisonment, focusing on memoirs and correspondence written by left-wing working-class women witnesses and victims of the harsh political violence ravaging Cold War Bologna in the early 1950s. Working-class women’s gendered memoirs and correspondence, long stored in family archives and recently rediscovered, powerfully question the male-oriented collective narratives of those events. These …

  • Il lavoro attraverso lo sguardo femminile

Maria Chiara Di Trapani, Ilaria Favretto et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia del Lavoro•2022

An exhibition titled Through the Female Gaze: Women and Work in Italy since the 1950s was held in London (December 2021) and then Edinburgh (March-May 2022). The curator and the organisers discuss in this article its content and importance. The exhibition combined photos of militant female photographers such as Letizia Battaglia, Marcella Campagnano, Lisetta Carmi, the Collettivo Donne Fotoreporter, Cristina Omenetto, Lori Sammartino, and younger…

  • Equal Pay and Social Justice

    Open Access•Emilio Betti•ARTICLE•The International History Review•2021

1The study builds on the international scholarship on equal pay as a global struggle, which peaked in the so-called Golden Age of the twentieth century but continued to be highly relevant in the decades following the UN International Women’s Year and nowadays as well. The debate and struggle for equal pay in Cold War Italy is investigated as a case study useful to understanding how the very concepts of equality and social justice were put into pr…

  • Historicizing Precarious Work

    Open Access•Emilio Betti, Eloisa Betti•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•2018•Cited by: 40•References: 27

This survey article seeks to contribute to the understanding of the concepts of precarious work and precarization in the history of industrial capitalism by addressing the debate in the social sciences and humanities over the past forty years. Based on a gendered global approach, this article aims to offer a critique of the Global North-centric perspective, which largely conceives precarious work as a new phenomenon lacking a longer historical tr…

  • Gender and Precarious Labor in a Historical Perspective

    Open Access•Emilio Betti, Eloisa Betti•ARTICLE•International Labor and…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article investigates the historical relationship between gender and precarious labor by analyzing the case study of Italian women in the second half of the twentieth century. A gendered historical approach shows that different production modes and working conditions were simultaneously present in Fordist and post-Fordist societies, and women, as well as migrants, experienced a significant level of precariousness even in the so-called golden …
