L’imaginaire du Nord est-il genré ? Regard statistique, lieux communs, figures et représentations
In this article, the author asks the question: “Is the imagined North gendered?”. From a statistical analysis of the proportion of women among writers in Northern cultures (understood here as a circumpolar whole, and not strictly European) and from a statistical sketch from a body of works that form the imagined North, then taking into account recent studies, in particular those of Heidi Hansson, Amélie Nadeau and Renée Hulan who study the relati…
Historical Perspectives on Exceptional Climatic Years at the Labrador/Nunatsiavut Coast 1780 to 1950
This interdisciplinary study presents a human perspective on climatic variations by combining documentary, discursive, instrumental, and proxy data. Historical sources were used to characterize climate variations along the coast of Labrador/Nunatsiavut during the 19 th century and the first half of the 20 th century. Written and early instrumental archives provided original information on the state and perception of climate before the establishme…
In this article, the author compares, from the point of view of the imaginated North—conceived as a system of signs,—two issues of poetry journals which both propose to think, in the North, a place where the relationships between reality, fiction, power, politics, history and poetry, blur. The first, published in Paris in 1961 in the Cahiers du Collège de ‘Pataphysique, deals with “the North Pole”; the second, published in Montreal in 1964 in the…
Iceland and Images of the North
With a radically changing world, cultural identity and images have emerged as one of the most challenging issues in the social and cultural sciences. These changes provide an occasion for a thorough reexamination of cultural, historical, political, and economic aspects of society. The INOR (Iceland and Images of the North) group is an interdisciplinary group of Icelandic and non-Icelandic scholars whose recent research on contemporary and histori…
The North and the Great Expanse
