  • Islamists, civil rights, and civility

    Open Access•Jakob Skovgaard‐petersen•ARTICLE•Contemporary Islam•2023•References: 4

From the 1980s, revisionist Sunni Islamist thinkers have engaged in a hermeneutical effort to argue for the full acceptance of non-Muslims as equal political participants and citizens in an Islamic polity. A key text in their argument is the so-called Constitution of Medina, regulating the interaction between the newly arrived followers of Muhammad and the existing tribes in Medina who were either polytheists or Jews. This paper investigates the …

  • Featuring Fiqh

    Jakob Skovgaard‐petersen•ARTICLE•Middle East Law and Governance•2023•References: 3

Although they may have learned the norms and practices of fiqh at home and in school, most Muslims have scant knowledge of the ways in which their religious laws and mores were practiced in pre-modern times. Indeed, when it comes to imagining and understanding the role of fiqh in earlier Muslim societies, many contemporary Muslims get their information through fictional treatments, particularly from films and television dramas. For Arab Muslims, …

  • Media controversies and the cultural policies of the Morsi government

    Open Access•Jakob Skovgaard‐petersen•ARTICLE•Communication and the Public•2017•References: 3

When in June 2013 the cultural production environment mobilized against President Morsi and his minister of culture, this turned out to be a prelude to massive popular demonstrations and the removal of Morsi by the army. But what were the cultural policies of the Morsi government all about? The article traces the cultural policy agenda of the Muslim Brotherhood and its Freedom and Justice Party, and the major controversies they engendered when in…

  • A Typology of Fatwas

    Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen, Jakob Skovgaard‐petersen•ARTICLE•Die Welt des Islams•2015•Cited by: 2

This paper seeks to shed light on the nature of fatwas as sources for the study of Islamic legal and ethical thought by drawing some distinctions between various basic types of fatwas and the information we may expect to derive from them. It identifies and provides an account of what are here termed as the ephemeral, the school, the court and the public fatwa. In each case it discusses the type of authority they involve and, in the context of thi…

Rash I d Rid # 's ideas and ideals of the intellectual are to be found pre-eminently in a work serialized in Al-Man # r, in 1901, called Muh # war # t al-muslih wa-al-muqallid (The Debates of the Reformer and the Traditionalist) . This work contains much of Rid # 's thinking on religious reform. A very interesting aspect of the work is that it is a work of fiction. • The Sunni religious scene in Beirut

    Jakob Skovgaard‐petersen•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Politics•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The general organization of political life in Lebanon along sectarian lines ‐ the so‐called confessional or inter‐sect system ‐ has received ample attention in the writings on Lebanon, and rightly so. What this politization of religious identity has meant to the religious life and institutions of the various communities themselves has received somewhat less attention. This article will deal with the religious dimension of Beirut's physical and so…

  • Religious heads or civil servants? Druze and Sunni religious leadership in post‐war Lebanon

    Jakob Skovgaard‐petersen•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Politics•1996•References: 1

The end of the Lebanese civil war in 1990 coincided with the death of two major figures on the Lebanese Muslim religious scene. Hasan Khalid, Mufti of the Lebanese Sunni community since 1966, was killed in 1989; Muhammad Abu Shaqra, who since 1949 had held the position of the Druze Shaykh al‐'Aql, died in 1991. These two religious heads had many things in common, not least a strong personality and a talent for carving out a political platform for…
