Proportionality and precaution
During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments worldwide invoked the ‘precautionary principle’ to justify policies designed to protect public health. This principle holds that the state may act proactively to avert harm where there is factual uncertainty about that harm and the efficacy of policies proposed to mitigate it. Many of the policies introduced during the pandemic limited citizens’ constitutional rights. This article accordingly analyzes how…
It's Not Okay for You to Call Me That: How Sexual and Gender Minority Youth Cope with Bullying Victimization
Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) have higher rates of bullying than their heterosexual peers and must disproportionately cope with bullying victimization. The purpose of this research is to highlight various coping strategies employed by SGMY. We conducted 20 cross-sectional, semi-structured online interviews with SGMY about their bullying experiences and coping strategies. We coded interviews with descriptive qualitative research to illus…
Educating the Next Generation of Public Health Social Work Leaders: Findings from a Summit
This article reports the findings of a 2-day public health social work (PHSW) summit that brought together PHSW educators, practitioners, and administrators to generate ideas for preparing the next generation of PHSW leaders. Data from focus groups revealed four themes: the importance of PHSW in our healthcare delivery system, the need for public health social workers to develop their professional identity, the significance of branding/promoting …
Ethics of Online Assent: Comparing Strategies to Ensure Informed Assent Among Youth
Individuals, including youth, often participate in online research without understanding the characteristics of studies they have agreed to be part of. We assessed the impact of including questions as part of the assent process by randomizing 568 youth to one of three groups: (a) asking youth to only read study information and then indicate their willingness to participate, (b) requiring youth to answer two questions about the study's risks and v…

This article is a culmination of a three-year effort by an expert panel to address the need for better understanding of suicidal behavior and suicide risk in sexual minority populations, and stimulate the developme…
Individual trajectories of substance use in lesbian, gay and bisexual youth and heterosexual youth
Aims Several decades of research have shown that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults are at high risk for substance use and substance use disorders, and a recent meta‐analysis shows that these disparities most probably begin in adolescence; however, no studies to date have examined longitudinal growth in substance use in LGB youth and heterosexual youth to determine if they follow different trajectories into young adulthood. The primary aims o…
Associations between substance use, sexual risk taking and HIV treatment adherence among homeless people living with HIV
Prior research suggests that the interconnections between substance use, HIV risk and lack of adherence to HIV medications are especially strong among homeless individuals. Thus, study of these interconnections warrants public health attention. The objectives of this paper are to describe patterns of alcohol and drug use, associations between substance use and participation in high-risk sex, and associations between substance use and adherence to…
Sexual orientation and adolescent substance use: A meta‐analysis and methodological review
Aims Several decades of research have shown that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults are at high risk for substance use and substance use disorders (SUDs). These problems may often start prior to young adulthood; however, relatively little is known about risk for substance use in LGB adolescents. The primary aims of this paper were to conduct a meta‐analysis of the relationship between sexual orientation and adolescent substance use and a syst…
Living Wage and Optimal Inequality in a Sarkarian Framework
Principles from the social thought of the Indian philosopher P.R. Sarkar are employed to show that there exists an optimal level of economic inequality that joins the values of economic justice and efficiency. Sarkar favored establishing a living wage as well as a maximum wage that allows for work incentives. It is argued that the primary justification for inequality is to provide incentives for individual productivity, and that the value of thos…

Symbol, Myth, and History in the Thought of Martin Buber
This article explores the intricate relationship between symbol, myth, and history in the philosophical framework of Martin Buber. Friedman argues that Buber's dialogical philosophy views symbols not as mere representations but as dynamic forces that mediate between individuals and the world, shaping both personal and collective understanding. He examines how Buber distinguishes between genuine symbols, rooted in lived experience and fostering co…
