From the historical Roman road network to modern infrastructure in Italy
The road system built during the Roman Empire continues to have a significant impact on modern infrastructure in Italy. This paper examines the historical influence of Roman roads on the development of Italy's motorways and railways. The empirical analysis demonstrates how modern Italian transport infrastructure largely follows the path of the consular trajectories established by the network of Roman roads. These ancient roads, being paved and co…
Distance-varying assortativity and clustering of the international trade network
In this paper, we study how the topology of the International Trade Network (ITN) changes in geographical space, and along time. We employ geographical distance between countries in the world to filter the links in the ITN, building a sequence of subnetworks, each one featuring trade links occurring at similar distance. We then test if the assortativity and clustering of ITN subnetworks changes as distance increases, and we find that this is inde…

Examining the literature on “Networks in Space and in Time.” An introduction
The special issue of “Networks in space and in time: methods and applications” contributes to the debate on contextual analysis in network science. It includes seven research papers that shed light on the analysis of network phenomena studied within geographic space and across temporal dimensions. In these papers, methodological issues as well as specific applications are described from different fields. We take the seven papers, study their cita…
The World Trade Network
This study uses the tools of network analysis to graphically and analytically represent the characteristics of world trade. The structure of the World Trade Network is compared over time, detecting and interpreting patterns of trade ties among countries. The results show that the trading system has become more intensely interconnected, and trade integration at the world level has been increasing, but it is still far from being complete, with the …
