  • How Do Immigrants Promote Exports

Open Access•Gianluca Orefice, Hillel Rapoport et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 6

How do immigrants promote exports? To answer this question we propose an empirical framework allowing to disentangle the role of migration networks that operate at a bilateral level from that of productivity channels (knowledge diffusion and increased workforce diversity) that operate at the aggregate level. We find evidence supporting both, at the extensive as well as at the intensive margin. The results are robust to using various IV strategies…

This paper explores the economic impacts of preferential trade agreements, conditional on their level of ambition. It clusters 278 agreements, encompassing 910 provisions over 18 policy areas and estimates the trade elasticity for the different clusters. These elasticities are used in a series of general-equilibrium counterfactual situations for endowment economies, revealing that deepening existing agreements (the intensive margin of regional in…

  • The effect of local taxes on firm performance

Open Access•Federico Belotti, Edoardo Di Porto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2021

This paper investigates the effect of local property tax for businesses on firm performance by using a panel of Italian manufacturing firms. To identify this effect, we implement a pairwise spatial‐differenced estimator and exploit the exogenous variation in local property tax rates caused by the political alignment of local and central governments. We find that business property taxation has a sizeable negative impact on equipment, the more vola…

    Open Access•Lionel Fontagné, Gianluca Santoni•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 5

A large portion of the productivity differentials among locations is related to density. Firms located in denser areas are more productive (Combes et al., 2012a, Econometrica, 80: 2543–2594). We show in this article that resource misallocation is lower in denser areas and argue that misallocation plays an important role in explaining the observed productivity premium of large cities. Using a methodology proposed by Petrin and Sivadasan (2013, Rev…

  • Human-mobility networks, country income, and labor productivity

    Open Access•Giorgio Fagiolo, Gianluca Santoni•ARTICLE•Network Science•2015•References: 11

This paper asks whether the level of integration of world countries in the international network of temporary human mobility can explain differences in their per-capita income and labor productivity. We disentangle the role played by global country centrality in the network from traditional openness measures, which only account for local, nearest-neighbor linkages through which ideas and knowledge can flow. Using 1995-2010 data, we show that glob…
