Strategic information transmission and social preferences
This paper reports on experiments regarding cheap talk games where senders engage in deception also when their interests are not in conflict with those of the receiver. The amount of miscom- munication we observe is higher than in previous experimental findings on cheap talk games, even though, as in previous work, some participants appear to feature a cost of lying. A novel feature of our framework is that sometimes senders’ and receivers’ inter…
A model of network redistributive pressure
In this paper, we propose a network model to explain the implications of the pressure to share resources. Individuals use the network to establish social interactions that allow them to increase their income. They also use the network as a safety and to ask for assistance in case of need. The network is therefore a system characterized by social pressure to share and redistribute surplus of resources among members. The main result is that the pot…
An Experimental Study on the Effects of Communication, Credibility, and Clustering in Network Games
We examine how preplay communication and clustering affect play in a challenging hybrid experimental game on networks. Free-form chat is impressively effective in achieving the nonequilibrium efficient outcome, but restricted communication has little effect. We support this result with a model about the credibility of cheap-talk messages. We also offer a model of message diffusion that correctly predicts more rapid diffusion without clustering. W…
