  • Is moving the solution? Evidence from a social housing demolition program in Santiago, Chile

    Francisca Bogolasky Fliman•ARTICLE•Urban Research & Practice•2025

In 2013, a social housing demolition program was implemented in Santiago, Chile. The program was voluntary, and residents were required to apply collectively. This article employs mixed methods to explore the decision-making processes of residents who stayed and those who moved. Residents resisted the negative narratives of their areas, demonstrating alternative ways of thinking about the neighborhood, and expected to move close-by, although to d…

• Did child obesity decline after 2016 food regulations in Chile

Open Access•Paul T Von Hippel, Francisca Bogolasky Fliman•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2024

We estimated trends in the prevalence of obesity and overweight among Chilean primary and secondary students before and after Chile’s 2016 regulations on the marketing and availability of foods high in energy, total sugars, sodium, or saturated fat. We used data from Chile’s Survey of Nutrition, which measured the body mass index (BMI) of students in government-funded schools. Using BMI thresholds defined by the World Health Organization, we calc…

  • Socio-spatial trajectories and health disparities among older adults in Chile

    Open Access•Vidal, Ignacio Madero-Cabib et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2024•References: 10

In this study, we examine residential trajectories since birth among older adults in the Santiago Metropolitan Area, Chile, and their association with health outcomes. We linked retrospective residential information for a sample of 802 individuals aged 65-75 in 2019 to context-based information from decennial censuses. Our analysis reveals substantive heterogeneity in individuals' residential trajectories, thus mirroring social and urban changes …

  • Does residential mobility affect educational outcomes? Evidence from Chile

    Francisca Bogolasky Fliman•ARTICLE•International Planning Studies•2023

There is mixed evidence about the effects of residential mobility on children’s educational outcomes. In 2013, the Chilean Ministry of Housing implemented a social housing demolition programme, which focused on projects with severe structural and overcrowding problems. Residents from demolished buildings received a subsidy to relocate. In this paper, I conduct a two-way fixed effects analysis and mediation analysis to explore if residential mobil…
